Either way, I'm excited to see what's on the other side of the drain.

 

50+ years my ass, the last two years of Hugo Awards alone had the well poisoned by a bunch of bigoted sci-fi community insiders angry about their precious straight white male bubble being "infiltrated" by "outsiders." The genre is a cesspit of some of the most toxic attitudes in human culture endlessly repeated and reinforced with almost no critical engagement (and indeed post-Internet a rabid, sycophantic distrust of any such critical engagement) and it's only made worse by people who want a catch-free means to disown those toxic attitudes while simultaneously assuming supposed newcomers are acting in bad faith. As if the entire enterprise isn't just a ****ing commodity exchange and means anything to anyone in the marketing departments who couldn't care less if you live or die so long as you're buried in a Star Wars coffin surrounded by a tomb of Star Wars action figures.

there you have it: our salvation. going out to see movies for eight-year-olds isn't have as much a sign of cultural decay as going out to see movies for adolescent boys. star wars is bad, but there's worse.

So it's a strong sequel with some nice twists, albeit a bit long winded.
