    I think perhaps they did.
Several articles at the time stated that the original cut of the movie supposedly had a lot more Vader, and that he killed a lot of the main cast. I would assume that included Donnie Yen.

To be honest, I'm glad they didn't do it. In the reality of Star Wars it would have been stupidly one-sided, but the movie itself probably would've tried to make Chirrut look way stronger against Vader than he should have been.
He shouldn't even be able to land a hit on Vader.

With Bland Howard directing the Han Solo movie, it should be sufficiently bland enough to suit the tastes of Walt Disney.

He's also announced as the director of the movie adaptation of Neal Stephenson's bizarre and completely unfilmable SevenEves. But I'm sure Ron Howard can turn it into something bland.

Ron "I've always wanted to make a Star Wars movie, a predictable, pedestrian, by the numbers Star Wars movie that no one would be able to find fault with because they wouldn't be able to remember it long enough after seeing it to form any kind of a critique" Howard

Oh Ken, you go so over-the-top when you're being sarcastic!

    Narrator: Ken wasn't being sarcastic.

I've lost the ability even to tell whether or not I'm being sarcastic. Usually someone else has to tell me.

Tober Maguire actually presents his characters as very earnest and thoughtful in his films. That's what I admired so much about the Spider-Man films.

    According to this

The directors were trying to make a comedy and Disney was not looking for a SW comedy.

I see people today have issues with Ron Howard. Apollo 13, Far And Away, A Beautiful Mind; dude is a great director.

It's also over twenty years old. His more recent output is less encouraging.

I thought Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind were very slow and very boring.
The Lego Movie was very fast and very funny.

I suspect they wanted to make very fast and very funny slower and more boring. And they hired Howard to beat the movie into Star Wars submission.

No one's life is a comedy. I have no idea why anyone would want to see a character whom we are later supposed to take seriously have their backstory presented this way.

If there's one thing I think while watching Harrison Ford mug his way through Return of the Jedi as if in disbelief at the fact that he willingly chose to be in the film, it's "That there's a character I'm supposed to take seriously."

The film takes itself seriously. Regardless of the poor or excellent job an individual actor does, the overall story tries for a sober tone and wants it's component parts to be received in that way. Solo's actions are supposed to be substantive: his relationship with Leia, his friendship with Luke. These are points that later films have made central to their story, not one-off jokes to lighten the mood.

The MCU is really the only place that makes the idiotic proposition that we should take the story seriously while also making clear how much the characters themselves do not, even in-universe. It is an exhausting, terrible exercise, and frankly one of the worst trends in contemporary story-telling.

I liked Apollo 13. I'm not sure I've seen any of Howard's recent work.

His output post A Beautiful Mind is good but not great. He is just mediocre in the storytelling. He is a great technical director. If they're needing to right the ship and bring this home safe, then he is a solid choice.
