We have a winner!
The Battle of Thermopylae(hot springs) took place in 480 BC. It involved the Greeks (7500) versus the Persians (200,000 plus). At the time of the battle, Thermopylae was a narrow spit of beach less than fifty feet wide between impassable cliffs on one side and the sea on the other. Present day Thermopylae is now, thanks to silt from a nearby river, over three miles wide.
The Persians were able, thanks to a Greek traitor, to find a pass through the cliff/mountains and go around and outflank the Greeks from the rear. Most of the Greek army retreated, but around 1500 stayed to delay the Persian advance as long as they could. Among these Greeks were the 300 Spartans which is the group most associated with this battle. The Spartans held to the end, and all of them were killed. However, all the Greeks that fell at Thermopylae succeeded. Because of them, the remaining Greek army was able to collect more reinforcements, and were able to drive the Persians out of Greece once and for all. If someone today says, "Go tell the Spartans we have done our duty.", they are saying they have done all that they could.
According to legend, the Persians tried to get the Spartans to surrender. A Persian emissary told the Spartans that the Persians had enough archers that when they all fired their arrows, it would block out the sun.
To which a Spartan commander calmly replied, "Then we will fight in the shade."
Truly a statement any Mandalorian could respect.
Side note: Saw a preview on TV today for a new movie they have apparently made about this battle. It is titled, "The 300". Release date of March 9th(I think).
