I thought it was a supern episode, one of the best. My only complaint was the 6 months later scene which wasn't necessary. Other than that, a really good episode.

I really loved this episode for the effects mainly, its mind boggling how they manage to re-create the destruction of Pompeii for the episode was amazing imo and that one shot at the end was crazy.
The story as has been said was... lacking somewhat. Also what the hell was up with the Doctor and them watching everyone die? At the end of the last season the Jones family were distraught at the fact that the Master made them watch the islands of Japan burn but 20,000 people in Pompeii? No problem! Some inconsistency there...

Because the show isn't allowed to veer from the format laid out by the powers that be at the BBC.

You mean that's why they never have enough other planet episodes, because they aren't allowed?
I assumed a flagship show like that could do the series any way it wants provided it stays in line with the charter and watershed rules.

Apart form the modern parts (the natives speaking in "modern english" accents) it was like watching an old episode of Who. It was not soo funny this week but my fears about Tate ruining the whole thing are fast disappearing, she's as good as Rose but for different reasons and a thousand times better than Martha Jones.

I reckon they've got to ensure they keep the lazy, lazy Saturday night audience. Thus they have to stick to Earth, to a series of recognisable events, play each series out in the sam way as the last and so on...
"market research indicates audience like this sort of thing" yadda yadda yadda

I kinda liked it. The Doctor fighting off aliens with a water pistol was lol-worthy, the effects were great, and Catherine Tate showed off her...talents quite nicely.
Next week's looks even better. Evil Ood FTW.

P.S. It seems the recurring theme in this series is the Shadow Proclamation. It's been mentioned twice in two episodes, now.

Well, there was a Time War on you know
Not sure exactly what The Shadow Proclomation is, but if it was established by the Time Lords it may not be very valid if they're dead, although I guess the Doctor still has power to enforce it.
I agree it had an old style feel to it. The set when they were running around the volcano looked very like how sets in the old series were done, just fake rocks with red lights, smoke and a bit of fire. If Tom Baker had been in it I'd never have known the difference.
I recall the Doctor asked about how the Pyroviles were able to predict the future. Was that acutally explained?
I know he explained how they could read minds.

I don't think that The Shadow Proclomation has anything to do with the Time Lords, maybe a result of the Time War and separate organisation from them.
And I really would have loved the Doctor to repeat the "Do I have the right?" line from "Genesis Of The Daleks" before blowig up Vesuvius

The Ninth Doctor approached the Nestene Consciousness under the articles of the Shadow Proclamation, which seems like it was introduced pre-Time War. It may be some kind of Galactic UN (complete with their very own enforcers if episode one is anything to go by. The Judoon perhaps? They've been touted as appearing in the series finale.)
The missing planets will be separate from the Time War I think. It wouldn't have been mentioned were it (as the Time War is long over). This is probably due to an unknown force taking over planets (this is where Davros and the Daleks come in, no doubt).
