The previously mentioned chronic acting and preaching comes from her, ok not just her but it would be reduced if she was not in it.
being useless would be fine if she didn't waste the show's airtime by standing inside the TARDIS doing nothing. And although Martha was cloned for 90% of the show the clone did far more then Tate did. The companion is actually supposed to help, otherwise the Doctor should just be on his own.
This last two-parter consisted of Donna going to see her family, going back to the UNIT base, standing around in the TARDIS and KOing one Sontaran.
The current revival has an obsession with always having a whole backstory with the companion's family, who are usually annoying and have little relevance to the story. The series is meant to mostly be about The Doctor not about his companion.
The Sarah Jane Adventures was a good title for a spin-off show that had a primary focus on a companion character.
This in itself is not Catherine Tate's fault it's just a fault with the show.
I'm sure she's putting in her best effort, but she wasn't exactly great in The Runaway Bride so I don't know why they thought she'd be able to do an entire series.
If K-9 out-acts her in the series finale I won't be too suprised.

Thgis series has actually had a companions family that isn't insufferably annoying as Bernard Cribbins is amazing. Also, your complaint about her not doing much doesn't make sense when you say the show is supposed to be about the Doctor.

It's the fact they actually film her doing nothing. If she was in the background most of the episodes and didn't do a lot then OK, but to actually have a scene with just her not doing anything is a major waste of air time when they could be focusing on the villains or the Doctor actually doing something.

That's a writing issue, not a Tate-acting issue.

Yeah, I find her more interesting than all of the other companions put together.

I loved the little moment of self doubt she had in Poison Sky and the Doctor saying to her "Don't talk about yourself like that." I just thought it was very sweet and reassuring.
I've got some reservations about this weeks coming episode, but I'll be happy to be proven wrong on. Plus after this week we have the Agatha Christie episode which I'm highly looking foreward to.

I just wants me some Moffat. Hopefully when RTD buggers off we'll get more Moffat episodes seeing as how he's their best writer by miles.

I'm just glad the Doctor is still on the air, with new episodes we haven't seen before.

Well, 15 minutes in and I feel like I've been watching for an hour. Unless it improves rapidly it's going down as my least favorite episode of the season so far.
And the last 5 minutes perked it up a bit but didn't make up for it.
