Maybe this was down to me missing the first 20 minutes of the show, and having been out watching Euro 2008, but...what the hell happened?

The people weren't dead. In mid teleport, they were all saved onto the library's hard drive, rather than re-materialising.

Yeah I got that part, I was wondering more along the lines of the Doc and River.

He wasn't sure whether to trust her, so she whispered something in his ear. Later on, it was revealed that she'd said his real name. The Doc said that there's only one situation where he'd let someone know his name, but didn't elaborate.

Fair enough.
Think we'll end up finding out his real name at the end of the series?

Damn, I hope not. If RTD chooses it, it'll be bloomin' Liberace or something :

No. If we ever find out its real name the show will end. There is a reason it is called Doctor Who.
The first episode of this two parter I didn't like for some reason. This second one blew me away. Great episode. I loved how they left things up in the air as well. Just shows we don't need to know everything to have a good episode. I'm so glad this guy is taking over. Looking forward to those 3 specials in 2009 even more now as he'll probably write them all.

RTD is stepping down after the 09 specials. He's writing them all, Isn't he?

I liked it a lot, gave away a lot without revealing too much.
Cal was an interesting idea, even if she was a partial rip-off of HAL 9000.
The data ghosts were very clever.
If the quality of series 5 is as consistant as this two-parter was then Who will be awesome once more (if Moffatt can maintain that level of writing).
I sure RTD's 3 specials next year will be good.

Just because they shared two letters does not mean it was a rip-off, partial or otherwise. You could say the same for "Mother" in Alien or any one of a few hundred sci-fi movies/books. AI is predominant in a lot of sci-fi and Cal, remember, was not even artificial. Funny thing is though that HAL was not terribly original, just move each letter one place up the alphabet to see what I mean...

The 2 best episodes I have seen for ages IMHO, and Im glad that Moffatt is taking over too. Made me sit up in my chair for a change!
Good to see Dr Who back on better ground - I thought I was beginning to have Episode 1 style trauma flashbacks for the last couple of seasons and was wondering when Jar Jar would appear to enter my nightmares again....
I loved the River Song storyline....excellent!
