Seems that bookies are now making odds on who will be Matt Smith's compnaion when he becomes The Doctor.

The BBC have stated that in order to give people more optimism and appeal after casting an unknown, they will attempt to cast a big name as a companion.

Unfortunately, current favourites are:

Lilly Allen
Rachel Stevens
Kelly Brook
Fearne Cotton

None of them are actresses. One is just there to look good, one is a has-been pop star, one is a currently not that great popstar, and the other is one of the most irritating presenters on TV.

Why not cast a big name person who's a proper actress?
The BBC has plenty of choice

I think with a younger Doctor there needs to be an slightly older companion.

Unless Moffat is brining River Song into it? Maybe she turns up in the specials (explains how she knows what Tennant looks like) then when he appears 'on her doorstep, with a new suit and a hair cut' it is Smith. Means we know what his screwdriver looks like.

Maybe the BBC dosnt mean 'big name' as the companion, maybe they mean 'someone we will know' which could be Song.

In any case, all those choices SUCK MASSIVE FOOTBALLS BBC!! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!

Although in Rachel Stevens case a) she would be older than Smith (I think) and b) Piper was an ex-pop star that people moaned about when cast, look how she turned out lol

But Billie Piper always wanted to be an actress over a singer, hence why she retired from her singing career not that long after she started.
And she had some roles before Dr Who, Rachel Stevens is not an actress.

Yes she would look good (like Kelly Brook would), but the companion needs to ask the right questions and be helpful. Wouldn't want someone in who screams all the time.

And casting Catherine Tate showed the pitfalls of bringing in someone with very little serious acting experience. Terrible she wasn't, but she was hit & miss in the quality of her performances. She couldn't adapt well outside of doing her comedy stuff.

It would be worse casting someone with no acting experience at all.

Donna was leaps and bounds above Martha.

But I wouldn't bet against Rose coming back. Smith has worked with Piper before.

Hopefully there will be no more Rose

I'd like to see Sheridan Smith get it as I think she's a cracky feisty actress and is rather cute, otherwise I think a more mature companion is the way to go

Well she does a really good job as the companion in the radio adventures with McGann.

And I thought Smith was perfect companion material after watching Jonathan Creek over new years.

After I got on board with Donna's character, she quickly became a really good assistant. The fact that she wasnt into the Doctor romantically helped. I think they should have Sheridan in there as a more fiesty companion and not have her like the Doctor that way. Maybe the running joke could be that she keeps saying he is 'too young' for her.

And after getting the season 3 dvd set I love Martha, hope she joins Torchwood permanantly.

I don't think they'll bring Rose back again, they resolved her storyline...twice.
She is with (a version of) The Doctor now, which is what she wanted.

I agree a more mature companion is needed. Then again, just because Matt Smith looks young doesn't mean he won't display the wisdom of an older wiser person. Peter Davidson always managed to do that quite well.

There's no chance that the Doctor will go all "yoof", the writers will not be allowed to.

Most likely, especially considering who the bookies are listing as favourites.
I can't honestly see the BBC picking those sorts of people, after all they have been pretty good with their choices so far.

Precisely, they can't be trusted. So best to wait until the BBC site itself says stuff.
