In my opinion, all the current speculation about various high profile assistants is just the press filling column inches / airtime. None of it is to believed, because 90% is probably dreamed up by the journalist the night before they have to submit copy.

For me, an 'unknown' assistant would be the best bet... in order to allow both actors to grow with their roles at the same time.

That could work, but also casting a more experienced known actor would help counterbalance it should Smith's inexperience start to show.

Smith isn't that inexperienced. He's no rookie to acting, simply not a well-known figure. A well-known assistant isn't necessary to balance that. And if, if, both actors have a dodgy start - that's not a disaster - they'll grow into it and if they stay long term we might get proper stability.

I mean he's inexperienced in terms of leading roles and carrying a show/series.
I'm sure he's done a number of acting jobs including off TV.

I have time for Lee Evans. I reckon he's got a dramatic performance in him.

As for Ryan, maybe her appearance in a special reduces the chances of her partnering Matt Smith in 2010?

Aye, I think Evans will be fine.

I've just been watching a lot of old Jonathan Creek episodes, and many of them feature comedians in straight roles (the title character included), and they all worked well. And I've seen Lee Evans in a few "serious" roles as well (not completely serious, but not slapstick mayhem either), and he held his own.

It also depends how major their characters are in the episode.
If they have smaller parts then they are less likely to mess up.

I would be disappointed if Ryan or Evans ended being the main villain in the episode.

I know this is sorta stating the obvious, but I've just re-watched The Girl in the Fireplace, and it's so far in advance of anything RTD has done it's just not funny. The Girl in the Fireplace represents what the show should've been. It's practically a different program. If only all Doctor Who was able to be at that challenging standard. Alas, I worry that even when Moffat takes over the reins full-time he'll have to intersperce the good stuff with easy access populist claptrap.

I was watching that as well. I liked that episode a lot. Some of her comments about knowing the Doctor seemed to be a foreshadowing of the 'Doctor Donna' from the last season.

Thats because GITFP is Moffat and everything he touches on Who turns to gold.

Even if we get the odd crap episode (as we always do, this isnt Fawlty Towers), Moffat will hopefully follow RTD's lead and do:

First few episodes (intro for Smith)
2/3 Finale episodes (A Moffat finale, I cannot wait!!)

I cant wait to see where he takes the series. And I hope River Song comes back (with or without Tennant)
