I am going to mention this that drinking laws yes are 21 and over in America but another valid point is in the california state they ask you for ID up to the age of 35 anywhere they sell drink if you dont have it them you will not get served.
Also the location of the LA convention centre there is not many hotels within walking proximity which is why they are laying on the shuttle service but also its also pretty simple to use the metro service if you cannot get a hotel nearby.
If you decide to go to disneyland in anaheim make sure you get a hopper pass which not only gets you into both parks but cuts out all the queuing for rides I ended up going on the space mountain three times and highly recommend going on the indiana jones ride and star tours.
You will not need your large rain coats either cause it will be around 85F-90F so pack your sun tan lotion.

Actually, they do that in several states. They did it to me when I lived in New Hampshire.

It should also be noted that a British drivers licence will not do. You must have your passport with you. I used my licence a couple of times, and it confused the hell out of them until I explained it to them. Passport is the safest form of I.D. out there for non-Americans.

Yes passports is the way to go for ID
Someone has mentioned a list of hotels in LA and the prices next to them are from a convention being held this june so it will give you a sort of idea how much they are.

Beverly Hilton - $245/$265
Figueroa Hotel - $125/$125
Hilton Checkers Los Angeles - $185/$185
Hilton Universal - $169
Holiday Inn City Center - $150/$150 (The closest hotel to the convention centre)
Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (Very famous hotel if you are into ghosts theres talk of marilyn monroe being seen) - $225/$225
Hyatt Regency Century City - $218/$245
Los Angeles Athletic Club - $147/$147
Los Angeles Marriott Downtown - $189/$189

All those prices are per night I presume? Wow, LA ain't cheap shock
I found good accomodation in NYC and Indianapolis for half that!

They are only rough estimates plus some of them will probably include convention discount
Yes they are per night, the cost of living in california is alot higher than the other states and also some of the hotels listed are the top ones in LA if you work out the prices they relatively add up to the same as what you would pay in london anyway like for example the roosevelt is smack bang in the centre of LA works out to be £121 a night which if you had a night in the ritz london works out around the same price.
The beverly hilton you expect it to be being in beverly hills.
From my point of view its going to cost a fortune anyway you look at it but when you go to things like this money is no objection.
