Well, there have been very loud whispers on the internet about his joining Indiana Jones 4 and finally this morning news came through that Indy's fourth outing has an extra cast member and yes it's Shia La...wait, what? It's not? Hold on a cotton picking minute, it's only that bleedin' Cate Blanchett!
Blanchett has been cast in an unspecified role in the new movie, which will begin shooting in June, from a script by David Koepp and under the directorial eye of newcomer Steven Spielberg, of whom we expect great things.
Before she appears alongside cinema's favourite whip-cracker, Blanchett will be seen in Elizabeth follow-up The Golden Age, reverse-ageing romance The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (itself once a Spielberg project) and Wes Anderson's take on Roald Dahl's Fantastic Mr Fox. Which all sound pretty fricking great, so yay for Cate Blanchett
Phew, it’s all kicking off over at Indy IV Towers, isn’t it? First of all came today’s news that Cate Blanchett has signed on to play an as-yet undisclosed role opposite Harrison Ford in the fourth Indy movie.
Then an email from an anonymous source dropped into Empire’s inbox this morning, which speculates that Messrs. Lucas and Spielberg may have finally settled on a title: it's all very unofficial at this point, but the current thinking is that the movie may wind up as Indiana Jones And The City Of Gods.
And, last but not least, our man at ShoWest, the big old exhibitor, erm, exhibition in Las Vegas, has reported back with an exclusive quote or two from Shia LeBeouf on his rumoured involvement in Indy IV/City Of Gods/Whatever It’s Called.
Now, if you’ve been keeping up to date, you’ll know that LeBeouf, who will soon be seen in the forthcoming Transformers, has been linked with the role of Indiana Jones’ son (would that make him Henry Jones III?), with some sources claiming that the deal was as good as done and dusted. But according to The Beef, that just ain’t so.
“I was rumoured to be in Superman as Jimmy Olsen, and I put a lot of eggs in that basket and I was really excited about it, so super-stoked,” said the 20 year-old actor. “Then it fell through. This is that same type of thing for me...”
Ah, but does that mean that there’s some truth in it? After all, for something to possibly fall through, the possibility of it remaining upright must first exist, non?
“It is a rumour, one that I might have started,” continued The Beef. “Who wouldn't? But at this point I don't have it and I'd be lying if I said I did. So it's a rumour, and maybe it's a rumour that's helping or hindering me. I don't know what the role is, I don't know if there is a role... but it's one of those things. It's just another rumour.”
Well, thanks for clearing that up, Shia. As for that rumoured title, it certainly sounds suitably Indiana Jonesy, and right now some of Empire’s finest brains are working hard to figure out if it’s a) genuine, and b) holds any clues as to the object Indy will be looking for this time around. We’re pretty sure that there is no connection to Fernando Meirelles’ classic, City Of God, though. Let the speculation begin!

George Lucas spoke to USA Today yesterday about the fourth Indiana Jones film and delivered a masterclass in saying a lot without actually giving anything away.
So, what did we learn from Lucas's chat with the venerable publication?
The full name of the film will be kept under wraps until the first trailer is released on Thanksgiving in the US. Since we don't have Thanksgiving in the UK – we just eat what we want and give thanks to no-one, NO-ONE! – we'll just call it the last weekend in November.
Cate Blanchett, who's role is still unspecified, was Spielberg's choice. "That's who my director wanted and I always bow to my director," said Lucas. "I approved her because she seemed like a good idea".
Sean Connery is not yet signed to return as Indy Sr. "We're still trying," is all Lucas would say.
The film will shoot in several top secret locations, including one that features a waterfall. Niagra? The Amazon? Logger's Leap at Thorpe Park? Who knows?

So, after weeks of speculation, during which the man himself kept a straight bat with journalists saying it was merely a ‘rumour’, it’s finally been confirmed that Shia LaBeouf has signed on for a part in Indiana Jones IV.
"Up until about two weeks ago, it was little more than a rumor," the 20 year-old actor, who also stars in this summer’s Transformers, told USA Today. "Literally, when I was saying, 'I don't know anything,' I didn't know anything. It was an act of faith. I have not read a script. I don't think anybody has."
Well, we’re pretty sure George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford have, Shia, but don’t be too hard on yourself, sunshine. You’ve just landed the role of a lifetime and confirmed your burgeoning rep as one of the finest young actors in the business.
Of course, since LaBeouf’s name has been linked with Indy IV, the ‘net has been awash with rumours that he would be playing Indy’s son – Henry Jones III??? - which, if rumours that Sean Connery is still mulling over the script, would have turned the film into a weird remake of Family Business. But LeBeouf insists that he’s not sure what role he’s playing.
"I can tell you I'm sort of the sidekick character, obviously," he says. "I'm sure there are a lot of laughs at my expense, and some kind of creature crawling on me. But it’s not going to be Short Round, all grown up!” Well, of course not – LaBeouf is a talented actor, but playing a Chinese character is probably beyond him.
But when he says he doesn’t know what role he’s playing, we’re inclined to believe him. A recent visit to Spielberg’s offices on the Universal lot, including sitdown time with Lucas, elicited nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch.
"Lucas looks at you and says simply, 'I can't tell you that,' " laughs LaBeouf in a quote we didn't just simply lift from the USA Today story, honest. "Then when he thinks he is supposed to tell you something but isn't sure, he gets up and leaves the room, goes in to talk with Spielberg and comes back and says, 'Nope. Sorry.' "
Spielberg, though, has been forthcoming on LaBeouf’s casting, telling USA Today in an emailed statement, "Shia has extraordinary range. I think of him as 'the young man for all seasons." So there you go. It’s just another indication that Indy IV is a reality – excitement levels building!

New (POSSIBLE SPOLER) News from JoBlo.com:
This article is basically a bunch of SPOILERS, so if you want to see the new INDIANA JONES movie with no prior knowledge, don't even bother reading this.
We landed a fairly hefty scoop on the next Indy (although nothing written here is 100% confirmed), still - as far as they know - titled INDIANA JONES AND THE CITY OF THE GODS. Perhaps most important is the idea that our man may in fact be battling aliens! Apparently, the first scene of the movie will pit Dr. Jones against Russian agents in Area 51. This sounds insane. I love it!
Also, their source tells them that Shia Labeouf "is going to be playing a greaser, wearing jeans and a leather jacket and riding around on a motorcycle. He also says that "Indy and Shia will be thrown together in this adventure but will not learn they’re related until a pivotal action scene."
I don't really have an overwhelming feeling of love for another INDIANA JONES movie (please don't read that to mean I think it's a stupid idea), but Labeouf is really making a mark on me, so I'll definitely check this baby out. Ray Wistone? No offence but he's not THAT good an actor, so he better pull his finger out and do something different for Indy, not just a gruff chump.
And bummer about Sean. Him and Harrison had the iconic paring that was the spark in TLC, so it's understandable that he IS retired, and I am sure we have enough power in the film to carry on with out his legacy.
