I'm just curious after seeing the queues on the news last week and this morning. Anyone here bank with them? If so, have you been in a queue to withdraw your money?
I don't have any accounts with them, nor is there a branch in my town.

Hadn't heard of them until a few days ago.
Don't they mainly deal with mortgages? According to the BBC, those with mortgages are the least likely to lose out
This reminds me of that scene in Mary Poppins when everyone clamours to get their money out of the bank.

I'd heard of them but don't have anything with them. I know they do mortgages but they also have savings accounts. Those account holders are the ones in line. The mortgages are fine since if the bank does fail those loans would just be sold to another financial organization.

I'm curious as to whether this will affect Newcastle United.
They are sponsored by Northern Rock and any financial trouble might mean they will pull out of that deal. That could be trouble for Newcastle, if they have to get a new sponsor in the middle of a season.

I think I heard about the Newcastle sponsorship on the news last week. Most of the stories have been about the queues though.

OK, I've only heard of them cause they sponsered the Durham County Cricket team.

Oh yeah, like they really would have huge trouble getting a new sponsor being such a poorly supported club and only being in the Premiership and all.....

i meant it in terms of the hassle of having to get a new deal sorted out. Those sorts of things do take time and are usually done during the summer.
After all, I doubt they can play without shirt sponsors. So if it took them a few weeks, does that mean they wouldn't be able to play?

Exactly, there isn't a rule that says each club must have a shirt sponsor. Barcelona have Unicef on theirs now don't they? A nice gesture.

Sky News is reporting that the Treasury is to announce Northern Rock's future at 4pm. Sky is saying that the Chancellor is going to say it will be nationalised.
