RE: The Top Three Films of 2007!!

For me 2007 has been a bit disappointing for films. Then again 2006 was quite an exceptional one which hasn't helped, and the over-subsriped threequel category has been a real damp squid (and no, that wasn't a pun aimed at Pirates of the Caribbean). The later half of 2006 saw great film after great film being released, but this year that just hasn't been the case.
It is also ironic that the writers guild/union have chosen to strike this year due to not being payed enough in their eyes. Based on the rubbish they've came-up with this year though, they have no right to demand more money or to even strike especially considering many other people who also help put these films together (and work much harder imo) get paid a great deal less and never get the credit that they deserve. Whoever came up with some of the story ideas for Transformers, for example, should be shot, not given a bonus!
However, this year has seen one quite exceptional film, and it was one of the threequels. Such was its quality that it just about makes up for all the other sub-par efforts.
Without further ado, here are my top three films of 2007:
3. This is England
If you want gritty realism, then Shane Meadows is your man. This is perhaps his most accomplished film to date, and two good hallmarks for any film are if it gets under your skin hours after viewing and one that conjures up lots of emotion at any stage. This is England does that, and it's great to have a fully hearted British film make my list!
2. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Once again a Harry Potter film makes my top three list. Since Chris Columbus waved goodbye to the director's chair and proper film-makers have been introduced, these adaptions have been all the better for it. The finale was exceptional and seeing at the IMAX certainly added to the drama. I have high hopes for the remaining two films.
1. The Bourne Ultimatum
This was an easy choice (and one I correctly predicted last year). What a film this is. Paul Greengrass confirmed that he is the best film-maker in town currently, the pace of this film is just relentless, Matt Damon showed why he's hot property, it had it all! And thankfully it avoids all the horrible typical Hollywood clichés that ruined the likes of Transformers. I can find no fault with the film and for what was essentially a Hollywood blockbuster with a vast budget, it showed with a bit of love and care (and respect for the audience) that these type of films don't have to conform to the unwritten rule book in-order to be successful.
Other films released this year worthy of a mention include Hot-Fuzz, Eastern Promises, Stardust and 28 Weeks later.
As for next year, I think it will be belong to The Dark Knight. But other films I'm looking forward to are Sweeny Todd (which looks great), James Bond: 007 (its rumoured title) and There Will be Blood.
Here's hoping 2008 is a better one, and already it looks like it will be, more so considering that there'll be no Spidermen, no Green Ogre's and thankfully no blooming Pirates

Don't forget Tice, the strikers are also television writers and this has probably been one of the better years for tv. Also, the stuff that the execs were proposing warranted striking and it's not often I say that.

The ones that are sticking in my mind for this last year are:
Beowulf
Om Shanti Om
Knocked up
We saw Beowulf in the IMAX cinema and it was truly a wonderful experience.
Om Shanti Om is a great spoof of 60's & 70's Bollywood cinema set in a bit spooky ghost story format.
Knocked up. Well, what can you say? Intelligent and very funny.

3) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - It may be longer then part 2, but it moved so much faster. Benefitted greatly from the returning Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa who was completely insane, in a good way. It had many funny moments, a great end battle and it rounded up the story effectively.
2) Transformers - Great looking robots, big battles and pretty good acting from the real life actors. I look forawrd to the next one.
1) Stardust - I just thought it was very funny. The cast were all very good and the story was decent. It also moved at a good pace.
Others to mention - Harry Potter 5, The Golden Compass, The Simpsons Movie, Hot Fuzz, 300, Sunshine, Beowulf & I am Legend.
Some mentions for worst of 2007 - Evan Almighty, Rocky Balboa, Hairspray, Spider-Man 3, Hitman.
Looking forward to for 2008 - Iron Man, AVP:Requiem, The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones, Bond.

Saw I am Legend tonight and it was very good, one of the best of the year!
I'll add a "worst" list like Richie: Golden Compass, Fred Claus, 30 Days of Night, Superbad, Bee Movie, Good Luck Chuck.

Now that I've managed to see a few more of the films that came out this year, I'm gonna re-do my list.
1. Bourne Ultimatum
2. Hot Fuzz
3. 300
Honourables to Die Hard 4, 30 Days of Night, Shoot'Em Up and 28 Weeks Later.
Worst ones are Spider-Man 3 and Harry Potter. Still want to see 3:10 to Yuma though...

No particular order here.
300/Transformers - Both of these we great achievements in special effects and cinematography.
Grindhouse - I love over-the-top B movies Rodriguez and Tarintino did a great job!
Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix - I think I enjoyed this one more than any other potter film.
Zodiac - Great actors and an interesting murder mystery that captivated California for a few decades.
The Bourne Ultimatum - Never thought I would see Matt Damon as an action star. Just watched it last night just a good as the previous two. It leaves open the possibility of a sequel.
Still have not seen: Beowulf, Sweeney Todd, The Simpsons Movie(though I don't have much faith for it), No Country for Old Men, Eastern Promises, Rescue Dawn, American Gangster, 3:10 to Yuma or Michael Clayton.
Honorable mentions: Live Free or Die Hard, Hot Fuzz, & Shoot Em Up.

I did also like Rise of the Silver Surfer, even though the first Fantastic Four movie wasn't that good.
It didn't try to be dark and take itself too seriously. It had good humour and good effects, and the villains were much better.
I also thought Ratatouille was excellent, Pixar have yet to make a bad film.
I hope their next film WALL-E is good.

Anyone else who wants to be in contention for winning the wooden spoon award by placing Pirates 3 in your top three list, please checkout the Mark Kermode review (in Vodcast form) and hopefully it will cure you of what's known as the Pirates of the Caribbean disease: Mark Kermode Reviews Pirates Of The Caribbean 3
It will mean missing out on that wooden spoon but it's a worthy sacrifice, believe me.

1 - Hot Fuzz, no question
2 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
3 - I Am Legend
Others include 300 and Transformers. Though I wish I'd seen 28 Weeks Later and Grindhouse. Beowulf was most disappointing, and those more average viewing films include Harry otter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Golden Compass and The Simpsons Movie.

But it wasn't. POTC2 never made me cringe so much I looked like a Klingon. The bit in the third film where the lame-ass Admiral is walking down those steps, magically avoiding the fire and shrapnel as his ship is blown to smithereens. POTC2 was good fun, 3 was just bunk.

2 felt long, I never noticed 3 was about 20 minutes longer.
It didn't do pointless things like rolling through the jungle in a big ball not advancing the story.
There are problems with it, but it moved faster and had more action and more life then part 2, especially with Geoffrey Rush in it.
I would've liked it if the Pirate Fleet actually did something rather then sit around, and I agree the end of Lord Beckett was rather OTT.
The whirlpool bit went on too long, but otherwise it worked well. Jack losing his mind produced some great bits:
"Nobody move!....I dropped me brain"
