Just stumbled upon this and it's quite creepy, despite the all knowing voice in the back of my head telling my it's got to be fake!

Looks like a rock to me which just happens to look a bit like a human. It's all to do with the brain seeking out the human image automatically because we see humans day-in day-out and I guess it's instinct too.

Indeed. I'm 100% sure there's other life out there, but not somewhere as close (nevermind cold!) as Mars

It could easily be a shadow.
And anyway, if there were aliens on Mars, we'd have seen more then one by now, and NASA would have covered it up rather then showing the public.
Also, if there is life out there that has technology to travel here, I bet they won't. Humans would most liekly kill or experiment on them anyway, so best if they stay away.

It's also the urge that humans have to not believe that we are all alone. The universe is a big scary place for children like us. Although that said, if the 'stranger' in white offers you sweeties, don't accept.

Why should we believe that we are all alone?
In a universe that is almost limitless, how could there not be another worlds that are like Earth?
They may be many millions of light years away and may have very primitive life, but they surely must be there.

Well if you ask me, and most people do, i'd say its a simple optical illusion.
No dodgy photoshop (after all, this came directly from NASA) or cover-ups about this.
For starters, why would NASA cover-up proof about alien life on Mars?
Can you imagine the funding they would get if it turned out there was something living out there?
They would pretty much get a blank cheque to send a humans to the red planet to make contact and properly study our neighbours.
If you were going to photoshop something, then it would be a better picture than this. It would give a lot more clues and hints to what the aliens looked like.
My first thought when I saw this was that it looked like Bigfoot!! Well the guy has been keeping quiet recently, perhaps Mars is his holiday home.
Where's Mulder when we need him? He'd be able to figure this out in five minutes. 
So in conculsion, i'd say shadows and rock formations. Though there is a possibility that it is actually an alien, as the evidence to the contrary is not entirely disuasive...
