Why do they have AREA 51?
NASA want to understand alien life and technology first, incase for some reason the aliens attack us (which seems to be the way humans think they will behave).
Or simply NASA wants to ensure it can kill and conquer all life-forms it discovers so the human race will be superior.
Aliens would cause fear and panice amongst many, and perhaps vigilantism from extreme groups or religious fanatics who would be outraged that other life disproves that God only made us.

You seem to be forgeting that NASA is a civilian agency, not some high powered secret government hit squad!
Area 51 and many bases like it are essential for the American's to develop and test the next generation of air craft in total secrecy.
And have you watched the news recently?? I hardly think proof of alien life would make any difference to how messed up the religious fanatics are right now.
Any life that is on Mars is almost certainly fairly primative in nature and the thought that our entire planet may be at risk unless you figure out how to
use their technology and science against them is fairly laughable to say the least.

I agree, but it won't stop paranoid people trying such things.
Look what happened to E.T.
He came in peace and was grabbed by the government so they could see how he worked. Hardly the right welcome for a fellow being.
And what about all the suposed Roswell stuff?
If aliens did really crash land there why would the US government cover it up?

I figure that if aliens have come to this planet, then yes, any government would be interested in how they work.
But we're talking about the possibilites of life on other planets, primative life at that. Which is a whole different ball game.
Its hard to say either way whether the government is (in theory) acting correctly by disecting and studying visiting life forms.
In the X-Files, the Syndicate worked in collusion with the aliens to conquer Earth and mankind (invasion date still schedulded for Dec 22nd, 2012).
But the Syndicate also gained the aliends trust and began work on a vaccine to the black oil alien virus in an attempt to combat and defeat the aliens come the time of invasion.
So while we may not know the full story of what happened at Roswell and other places, usually people have mankinds best interests at heart.
Just a shame the Syndicate was murdered by those rebel aliens before the vaccine could be mass produced.

On Mars
Obviously we know there's life on Earth.
But if there is life on Mars, the various Mars Rovers should get some images. I doubt there would only be one life-form on Mars if there are any and the rovers should be able to spot a bunch moving around.
