Unless it really was Evan and her limbo-state alternate reality changed it.
Don't forget, what happens in that world does not affect her (apart from if she dies).

Gene doesn't exist in the real world, and if her parents hadn't died they wouldn't suddenly be alive in the real world either.

Well, we're not sure what is real or not, are we? I definitely think Ashes to Ashes will take us down the "What is and isn't real" route next series?
