Saw it yesterday evening and really enjoyed it. I think it got the balance of pretty much everything spot on, and while you could shudder at the romantic edge the film had, it did need something like that and I think they just about got away with it.

The monster was great too, and for some reason I enjoyed egging him/her/it on!

Coz, I did indeed see the same thing as you at the end. My theory is that it's come from space, fell into the ocean and with-in a month has grown to its hugmungous size under the cover of the sea. I haven't read any other theories out there so I assume this might be a common theory.

The t-shirt that Rob's brother was wearing was something like 'Slush-o', a drink of some sort that has been connected in the viral marketing of the film with a full website.

For all those interested in Cloverfield's mysteries, and the online "game" (which went from the website, to myspace to youtube and elsewhere) that gave clues to characters and the lead-up to the monster appearing - check here

http://cloverfield.despoiler.org/index.php?title=Main_Page

Not sure how they got hold of these, but there are production notes to Cloverfield here

http://download.cloverfieldclues.com/cloverfieldproductionnotes.htm

According to the notes the monster's origin isn't fully known, but it was asleep under the sea for quite some time, it's a baby and when it wakes up is distressed - hence it attacking the city. It scratches off the "fleas" (which are dangerous to humans - the exploding lady isn't explained in the notes btw). There is no explanation why it picked up the Statue's head and then chucked it, though that was a symbolic film thing I guess.

From looking into the top link, the thing that fell into the water was a satellite supposedly - there was a lot of dodgy company in Japan stuff going on, something about an oil rig owned by that company that wasn't drilling for oil, and I think that is what woke the monster up.

That Slusho! site is great, lol.
Also hints at a secret ingredient for the drink that can only be found in the deep sea...interesting. The dodgy Satellite makes sense though, must be one of SONY's tongue

I also recorded and flipped the audio at the end, and it says "It's still alive", referring to the monster we all presume.

Wasn't Operation Hammer Blow another word for a nuclear strike?

I'd be suprised the creature would survive that and the general punishment it took in the film.

No-one is safe! worried

it's a mistake, when they comment on the monster being still alive...
what they are seeing is the mother.
and she's pissed off.

Yeah, she would be pissed off if her new born got killed by lousy humans who didn't even try to befriend it.

Also, Richie, Zilla was not a good monster, looked like a cast off from Jurassic Park, not a Godzilla type kaiju. And against the real Godzilla, he gets destroyed without even putting up a fight.

That movie was amazing - not often that something 'different' is combined well with what is essentially a monster run and hide movie. I was gripped, and found it totally believable. The SFX looked excellent, and the acting (almost sort of) worked.

However, I certainly don't want a sequel - I can't see where they can go other than down.

Alas, the Hollywood money-machine rolls onward.
