LONDON (AFP) - Britons are losing their grip on reality, according to a poll out Monday which showed that nearly a quarter think Winston Churchill was a myth while the majority reckon Sherlock Holmes was real.
The survey found that 47 percent thought the 12th century English king Richard the Lionheart was a myth.
And 23 percent thought World War II prime minister Churchill was made up. The same percentage thought Crimean War nurse Florence Nightingale did not actually exist.
Three percent thought Charles Dickens, one of Britain's most famous writers, is a work of fiction himself.
Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi and Battle of Waterloo victor the Duke of Wellington also appeared in the top 10 of people thought to be myths.
Meanwhile, 58 percent thought Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective Holmes actually existed; 33 percent thought the same of W. E. Johns' fictional pilot and adventurer Biggles.
UKTV Gold television surveyed 3,000 people.

I know of a few people who mistook Holmes as a real detective so that one isn't too suprising. But Churchill!? Yikes :S

To confirm this, I just did a "Real or Fiction" quiz on facebook. One of the replies on the results page has a comment by someone saying, "Since when is King Arthur fiction? you plank! xx"

I'd like to find out more about the survey because those results are just daft!
As for King Arthur, there's a very good chance he did actually exist but many of the story elements that we know from the Arthurian legend are just bigger, more fantastical elaborations of what actual happened in those days.

A lot of our myths/legends are partially based on reality.
King Arthur & Robin Hood were real people, but they weren't the type of people that they are portrayed as.
Arthur lived long before Knights in Shining Armour existed and I'm pretty sure he didn't have a magic sword, or if he was actually called Arthur.
Trouble is, with the lack of reading the modern generation do combined with things such as plaques in Baker Street saying "Sherlock Holmes lived here" it's not too suprising.
I believe that Holmes, Hood & Arthur all appeared in that poll of 100 greatest Britons a few years back, which is pretty crazy as they had little impact on the history of our country or the world.
There is a statue of Rocky Balboa in America, so I'm sure they'll be a number of people who think he's real.
The Churchill thing is a bit scary, but that is the way of the world unfortunately.
