Yea, but they're kids. They want school leavers to do it
Plus, how can an American tradition promote Britishness? The whole point of being British is finding the Royal family slightly silly in the first place

Didn't we already fight two wars so we didn't have to pledge allegiance to any Germans?

While I'm all for patriotism and taking pride in your country, I can't help but find this all a bit, well, silly.

Yeah, pointless. I'm for keeping the monarchy (mainly because changing to a republic now would also be quite pointless) but this isn't needed.

I wouldn't have much of a problelm with the whole thing if it was simply to the country. I am very much anti-Royal, and would never, ever open my mouth to say I like or support or stand by the Queen.

Slight difference. In the US we pledge allegiance to the flag and country.
I pledge allegiance to the Flag
of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands:
one Nation under God, indivisible,
With Liberty and Justice for all.
We don't pledge allegiance to the office of President of the US or to the current holder of that office.

Well, the President is elected, similar to our PM. I would never support an allegiance to the PM for that very reason. The monarchy is different though (Not that I'm saying I would do that either. Just correcting the President analogy )

Well, the Monarch is hereditary but he/she is still considered the Head of State. In the US, the President is elected but he/she is Head of State. My point is that we pledge allegiance to flag and country, not the Head of State.

Except that the American "head of state" actually has the power to do stuff and is elected. Our "head of state" is a purely decorative title. Not elected and no power to do stuff. The President/PM comparison is a million times more accurate than the President/Queen comparison.

A pledge would be awkward anyway.
As an atheist, I would not take the pledge of allegiance if it involved any "united under God" sort of stuff.
I've nothing against pledging allegiance to The Queen or the nation. She is Head of State and should therefore be respected as such.
The army pledge allegiance to the Crown don't they?
The Queen is head of the armed forces after all.

My point is the "Queen" is purely a symbol of the country, and so pledging allegiance to her (or the King once she pops it) IS purely a symbol of allegiance to the country. I wouldn't agree with anything religious in such a pledge, but if we consider the Monarchy to be purely a representation of Britain, then I have absolutely no issue with a Pledge of Allegiance.

Asking someone who does not support the monarchy to take an alliegence to the Queen is the same thing as making young people with no faith (or indeed those who are too young to have decided for themselves) participate in religious events at school - for example the assemblies at my school were of a great Christian bent; it is wrong.
Britain is not the monarchy. The monarchy may a representation of Britain to some, but it is not to many. Indeed to me it is a reprehensible institution. The pledge needs to be to the country, not to the Queen.
You cannot introduce a pledge to something that a great swathe of the population disapprove of.

I'm just generally against anything that involves swearing your allegiance to any institution, whether it be a church, a monarchy, or a country.
Makes me remember why I wanted to emigrate in the first place
