I'm just generally against anything that involves swearing your allegiance to any institution, whether it be a church, a monarchy, or a country.

Makes me remember why I wanted to emigrate in the first place tongue

I have to agree, I don't see how this would instil a sense of patriotism into school leavers, they'd be more likely to take it as a joke.

Out of curiosity, if this did happen...what happens to the people who refuse to pledge? thinking

I prefer the idea of compulsory service in the armed forces Starship Troopers style.

to be honest the idea is good however people say they wud rather pledge to the country and tbh the Queen represents the country so its basically the same thing.

i recon because of all these immigrants etc coming over here we are beginning to lose our britishness...

I don't like President Bush, but were I in his presence I would treat him with the respect a national Head of State is due, especially if they were the most powerful head of state in the world.

Ok we didn't elect The Queen, but she is still Head of State and the Crown controls many of the insitutions that keep the country going (The Armed Forces, Royal Mail, The Court Service etc).
She didn't ask to be Head of State and she has never done anything against her people, unlike her First Ministers and their governments.

Draw your own conclusions tongue

I'd have no great problem swearing some manner of allegiance to the country that I live in. I work to support the country (and myself, obviously) and use the facilities and priveledges afforded to me. I consider myself fortunate to have been born and raised here. I've only got to watch the news to think 'there but for the grace of God...'. And I'm not even religious tongue

Didn't we already fight two wars so we didn't have to pledge allegiance to any Germans?

If you're suggesting that the Royal Family is German then you'd be wrong. Unless you want to go back to George II? Lets not forget that the English nation was orginally partly from Germany anyway. Have a guess where the Saxons came from.

Also, its not a new idea. Empire Day was celebrated in thousands of schools for years.

As far as I'm aware, the Windsor family name is not the proper family name, they are actually of German decent.

And Empire Day is great, FFLondon members go every year tongue

Yes. George V changed the family and "Royal House" name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor in 1917 due to anti-German sentiments from the Great War. However, the last British monarch to be born in Germany was George II in 1683! The family name obviously comes from Victoria's husband Prince Albert as it is family tradition to take the name of the father not the mother, so Edward VII took his father's name of Saxe-Coburg.

Having a German surname hardly makes one German does it. As I said before, the vast majority of English people could probably trace their descendants to other countries (considering where the Anglo-Saxon (and Jute) migration originated).

Of the present bunch of "Windsors" George V + Mary of Teck were born in England; Edward VIII was born in England; George VI was born in England and his wife the Queen Mother was born in London from Scottish descent and the Queen was born in London. Only Prince Phillip was born elsewhere in Corfu, Greece (although he is also of Danish-German descent from the Oldenburg/Mountbatten line) + all their children were born in the UK!

By all means be anti-Monarchy but the whole "they're German" snipe is rather stupid imo.
