I have no idea about CPU speeds and motherboards, and the latest PCI-X, AGP, whatever type of stuff, and I'm looking to upgrade the old PC
Currently, it's a Pentium IV 2.4gHz, with 3GB Ram (DDR I think), and it's ridiculously slow. I can't even play a video file at the same time as unzipping a different file.
What's a top end motherboard/processor, and what's a better priced not-as-good-but-still-damned-fast processor?
What's all this "dual processor" stuff, and what does it all mean!??!?

Are you sure it's not spyware or a virus making your computer slow?
I have a 1.6ghz with 725MB RAM, and I could unzip a file while running a video.

Nah, I run a clean system.
Of course, the fact that there's 8 hard drives plugged into it might not help on the speed side of things

Yeh, that might be a problem
Surely one very large hard drive on top of the one that it came with is enough?

There's 4x120GB internal drives. With the upgrade, I'll be replacing it with 2 drives (I need a root drive, and a drive for video capture).
The others are all external

I'm used to fast computers, so I'm no help. My first one was 2.6GHz (back in 2002, that was super), and now I have a 2.4GHz Quad (so, basically, 9.6GHz)
However, your RAM is pretty good, so it's probably your HDs. Grab a 1TB drive and get rid of the rest.
It's times like these I enjoy my 500GB HD and lack of need for externals

Halibut, do you have backups of your files on those externals?

I'm backing up all the stuff on the externals as I type so I can then back up the 4 internal hard-drives onto those. The plan is (when I can) to get one 500GB internal drive to replace the 4x120 internal drives.

I'm absolutely no expert, but is there a software solution which would effectively ignore the additional HDs unless needed, hence improving your day-to-day PC speed?
Would an alternative solution also be to get a second PC, leaving your existing one for video capture / authoring, but a totally separate PC (networked) for everyday fun ?

Problem is, it's quite slow at video capturing as it is. So I plan to gradually build up a new PC, and use the old bits for a secondary PC for Mrs H
