Have you tried to post it without the preview? Since the preview doesn't show all smilies if you use more than five of the same kind, the error page might have happened because of that or it was just some kind of 'normal' error - not specific to the numbers of smilies.
But it's true (and if it hasn't changed recently) that if you (as a normal user or VIP) use too many MUCs (not smilies), you get an error page ('time limit expended') and can't post your post, but I haven't seen this happen to smilies-only posts.
So, don't cry... it might have been just a normal error and... there's always a way - and if it's about not using any smilies.
