Seems like Health Service is horrible all over the world. I can't complain too much about Germany because I'm hardly ever sick enough to notice. I get the meds I need and I'm fine with that.
But people having to see Doctor's on end or being in the hospital for a longer period of time -- well, it costs a whole lot of money. 10 euros per day while in the hospital. Depending on how long you have to stay, you'll be poor once you're healthy again.

I remember a few years ago meds used to be free for the average german citizen. Now you have to pay up to 15 Euros for a tiny pack of pills. Depending on how much you earn or in most cases around here when you're unemployed, that's a whole lot of money.

And then there's the general lack of acceptance concerning Doctor's. I had to go see a neurologist a few weeks ago and the man wouldn't even listen. So as a patient you're sitting there and you're really worried because you have no idea what's wrong with you. And then the Doctor gives you that one pointed look and you know that he doesn't believe a word you're saying.
I snapped at him -- my first time back talking a doctor -- and I totally accused him of being an ass and treating his patients as if they were worth nothing. That's the feeling he gave me.
As a patient you go to see a Doctor to get better, not to feel like you're crazy.

Thinking ahead, I'm guessing the health system will get worse in coming years.

As Skiara already pointed out, there is a lack of Doctor's. Good Doctor's anyway. They should get paid more.
I mean, my husband's a baker and he earns almost 2000 Euros a month. A Doctor doesn't ear that much around here. How messed up is that?

You also have to pay in Germany now?

*hugs Cem anyway a big, big deal!*

Gah, that is bad. And yes, I had recent trouble and I had difficulties to get an appointment then.

Is it really up to 15€? I just have to pay 'only' 5€ on my own for every medicine I buy. Lucky me, I would say.

Ceillean, is it really 2000€ netto? shock
He doesn't have to do unpaid extra hours each week until the maximum of allowed hours per week is reached, right?

Azure, you have to paid 10€ for each quarter, in which you go to the doctor's, you have to pay 10€ extra for medical work done at your teeth and for going to the hospital. Plus you have to pay for the medicine you by at the drugstore. As I said above, they try to save money wherever it's possible. sad

*wonders if she should tell this dreadful story, because she knows that there are good doctors out there trying to do their jobs!*

A dear study pal of mine lost a friend last year ago. He was in his mid twenties just like her, never ill.

One evening he had a weird headache and felt like puking all over. Because he had examens at university he wanted to get healthy again as quick as possible. So he drove to a nearby hospital in the Harz Mountains. He had to wait ages at the ER and one of the doctors there finally told him: "I am fed up with all those lazy students. Have a headache pill at home and don´t bother me any longer."

The guy went home, spoke briefly to my friend via the phone and lay down, feeling worse. It happend in the middle of the dinner with his parents. He dropped dead in the kittchen.

In the morgue they did a blood test and some other tests: the young man died of an untreated heart attack.

What ever happend to the ER doctor, I do not know, but my friend is heartbroken about the loss of her best pal.

That's one sad story, Azure. I'm sorry to hear that.

2000 Euros netto per month. But you have to differ between a single worker and someone who's married and has a kid. The taxes went down after we got married.
It's a whole lot of money to earn but it's hard work as well. Getting up at two in the morning, working until sometime past twelve in the afternoon. Back pains because he has to stand all day long. I wouldn't want to do it.

2000 Euros sounds like a lot but considering rent, monthly bills and everything else that's needed -- it really isn't a whole lot.

Especially now that we wanted to send Lilly to a daycare center once or twice a week, just so she could spend some time with other kids. It cost friggin 70 Euros per week. plain I can't begin to understand why.

Oh well. tongue

I think the NHS is still a bit different from the German health care. It is rather that you dont have to wait forever to get an important surgery done I think.and all the different organisation have dofferent offers, so there is a bit of diversity here I think.

At present I try to live from my student grant of 800 Euro a month and with my new teaching position I will have about 950 Euro left per month after the tax is off. I did NOT really improve...

*mumbles*

But things like this add to my happiness!

Ceillean, that's a lot in comparison of (for example) a normal seller who gets 1600 per month - before taxes of course. But I understand that it's goes away too fast, if you consider payment for your flat, bills and other things - plus the hurting back and the extra costs for a doctor... and so we are back on topic. wink

At least it's a little improvement, Azure, and there will be more improvements when you finished the whole education, right? happy

It's really sad about the friend and I wish that those things wouldn't happen. sad

Ah well, at a certain point things will improve. Right now I live the motto CARPE DIEM as much as possible. The weather has been cold, rainy and rather stormy in the NL. So I was at home reading, being on-line, writting letters and watching stuff on TV/ DVD.

There are small pleasures in life: a new flower pot on the balcony, getting called by an old friend, eating vanilla ice cream with melted chocolate left-overs from Easter and being noticed by a heavy working DU who is to meet his promotor tomorrow.

About that dead pal of one of my best study friends: yes, he left a gap in her life!

*laughs* Is that all? Here you have to pay a few hundred dollars a day(not counting tests, meds, ext...) if you do not have insurance. I know the dollar is weaker than the Euro but still 10 Euro is about something like $15-18.

How tiny of a pack? There is one place here that will give free oral antibiotics(up to a 10 day supply(30 capsules/tablets)) but without insurance, medication can cost well over $100 per prescription. One of my previous meds cost $75 for 30 pills. At that time I was lucky and had insurance so it only cost me $15 a month. After I lost my job and my insurance, I had my doctor switch me to something cheaper but it still cost me about $40 a month for it.

That happens in just about all healthcare systems it seems.

Yep, it can be a lot worse and I don't understand some parts of the American health system (sorry, if I stepped on someone's feet blush ), since stuff like 'not having an insurance' is just unfair. sad

But I have to admit that the situation about not having an health insurance can happen in Germany as well, but those are few cases that aren't covered by the law. Normally everyone has an insurance. I was in such a situation and I don't enjoyed it at no time. So in my view it's admirable how you manage everything, Gangrenous. happy

Edit: Azure, I just missed your post at the other page. Sorry. blush

It's great that found your own way and that you still find things to enjoy. I hope you keep this positive view. hugs

I hope everyone will head over there and send in your lists!

Well, if you ask so nicely...

*was actually on the way of leaving a big gap on the living-room sofa by removing a hard working DU from it who forgot about the time*

But well, that gives me some more time to hug Skiara and DG...

hugs hugs

... and to tell them that I am back tomorrow evening, because a certain gentleman is very busy with his rhodium surfaces and methane gas reactions.

Oh gods, medication pay. I believe my country has the most messed up rules. Insurance will only cover the cheapest form of birth control pill (dreaded Microgynon I believe). They do cover my Depo Provera but only because I need it to function (I don't think they want me dead sad ) Pharmacies do, however, stick a huge "ARE YOU TRYING TO GET PREGNANT? REMEMBER TO TAKE YOUR FOLIUM" sticker on my Depo which is extremely offensive. (Considering a) I'm infertile b) I hate kids and I'm not a breeding machine, just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I want to pop out brats left and right thank you c) None of their business d) It's /Depo Provera/ of all things.) I threw a massive fit over it because I found it so offensive grin That's simply a huge no no considering what Depo does. I'm not taking it for giggles -_- (Osteoporosis is sexy.)

Fun fact, insurance does not cover my glasses. Even though I have minus 7.5 and I can't see a single thing without them. They will cover ONE (1) glass if you have minus 10. Hurrah!
