Well hello "new" and "eager", strange name, but ok. Thank you for the greeting and against my better will, I will greet you back.

So how is TheGoodImperial doing on this fine day? Have you come to learn the ways of the Blue Dress, or role playing. (Yes, I feel good to tease everyone this day.)

No, seriously...Welcome, if you have questions, just ask. I am Darth Cadaverous, the most craziest Sith around....I think. Just PM me if you can, if not just post here. I will be back in and out soon. (Unless my dispatchers take my laptop away.)

I second that. I'd love to learn more about RPing, though I have little experience with role playing, I kinda get the hang of it. Is it too late to join the mini rpg? I see you've already got a game going.

Good young ones. You have just begun down the right path, by asking and admitting to it. Now, go over to the place that has the game and follow the directions. It is never too late to join in. It is there to help you and us oldies to keep fresh. For having little experience, do not worry, the ones who are playing are good guys, except that Darth Cadaverous, he sucks and wears a blue dress when driving a truck.

So jump in, create a "charater", then send it too Ktala who will toss it in the trash and laugh. No she will not, but I bet I scared ya.

And if you need some one on one, look for someone who does not have an apprentice....like me and a few others. I see great promise in everyone here, including yourselves. You both have the right attitude to start.

If you have any more questions and can not PM, just post them here. Someone will see it and answer it. If you want a teacher/Master just post it here, asking by name who you want.

Good Luck guys and become Sith.

The MAIN Study:

*AHEM!*
*Ktala looks down at those in attendence*

Well..I had these folks promise to write up classes:

Imperial_Hammer- "Top 10 Things a Newbie can do to piss of a GM."

Darthramza - "Role-Playing Posting for Dummies"

Qui-Gon_Reborn - "The Top Ten Things - that can REALLY ANNOY a Player!"

JEDIGUNSHIP - "Differences between a Newbie and a n00b"

Unfortunately, I havent seen a single class yet cross my PM box.

NOT ONE.

So, it seems I shall have to make the first leap.

So, presenting the class:

----------------------------
I want to play, but...Where to Jump in?
- Finding a game that's right for you.

So, now you have decided that you want to try a little bit of Role Playing on the boards, and you take alook around to see what you might be interested in.

The New Users Board has many fun games and such for beginners to the boards, not so much in the way of role playing.

The EU Community (Extended Universe) folks have many clubs, and groups that discuss various aspects of the different groups within the star wars universe... (ie Mandos, Sith, Jedi and have various orders and temples hidden within..)

But the MAIN site for Role playing is the RPF Forums.

The RPF is broken down into 3 sections at the moment:

Non Star Wars Role Playing.
Role Playing Forums
, and the
Role Playing Resource Forums

Non Star Wars Role Playing area was recently added for folks not wanting to just simply play Star Wars only games. Each game has their own interesting universe to explore. They can run the gambit from ADnD, to Matrix, to fantasy games.

The Role Playing Forums, have almost anything Star Wars related you can think of. Alternate universe, combining universes (Star Wars/Jungle Book), Before the movies, during and after the movie time periods.

And the Role Playing Resource Forms, are there to discuss new gaming ideas, and many areas of writings about the how to's of Role Playing. Plenty of good information here.

So, once you pick which forum you wish to venture into, the first step would be to look around, and see if there is a game that grabs your interest. The first post of every game, usually gives you a rough draft of what the game intends to go. Of course, not ALL games get to where they plan to go, sometimes because of the players, interesting detours develop. If your not sure, feel free to ask here, or one of the mods of the Forums for help. They can often help point you in the direction you wish to look for.

Most games require that you fill out a character sheet, and PM it to the GM to be approved in the game. Many GM's have no problems with new players, and will help you if they see you need it. They would rather you ask questions now, to help you get a feel for the game.

Now, Many new players have sometimes remarked, that they wanted to join a game, but the game was already in progress, and they feel they would be too far behind to catch up. Always PM the person running the game first. Many times, they can always use new players, as many people who signed up in the beginning, have moved on, and there are openings. Unless the game was set to only a certain number of players, or the game is drawing to a close, most GM's have no problems. Again, feel free to ask, vis PM. **ESPECIALLY DURING THE SUMMER!!** Games get VERY slow, and new players are almost always welcomed! grin

And PLEASE...PM your question. Dont clog up a game, with various questions. Some GM's do not like out of game chatter in their games, so always check with them first for their policy. Each GM is different.

I DO suggest you try to read some of the information about a game, instead of just PM'ing someone and going.. "can you tell me, whats going on in the game?" Reading will tell you many things, besides the story of the game. It will give you a feel for how the GM and the players interact. Some Games, the GM dosent mind one line posts, and are not too strict about how turns or interactions are played. Other GM, will not put up for either, and others will have almost little to no interaction with the players, relying more on the players to interact with each other. You can learn a lot with a bit of reading.

We were all new players in the beginning, at some point in time. Dont feel free about trying it out. You might find something you like. And if not, keep trying. With so many games running, you are bound to find something to peek your interest. If you DO decided to leave a game, just be nice, and let the GM know.

**Ktala looks up from her notes...**

"So, are there any questions out there?"

The Top 10 Things a New User Can Do To Piss Off A GM
By: Imperial Hammer

So you’re thinking about joining the Role Playing Forums here. Well congratulations! You’re at the doorstep to a vibrant world of writing and adventure that is relatively rare to find on the internet these days. TF.N’s RPF is a perfect fit for great internet Role Playing. It’s centralized, a nice medium sized, and welcoming.

Before you get started however, please read these 10 Cardinal Sins many new users commit when beginning their role playing career. Avoiding these mistakes will help to start you off properly. Sins 1 and 2 are the most important, and the most serious, concerning offenses to the very mechanics of RPing. Sins 3-5 are less serious, but still considered poor form if committed. Sins 6-10 are the least important, mainly common etiquette errors that will betray your newishness at worst.

#1.) Auto-Hitting: The Granddaddy of them all. Every game has a warning for this. Role Playing, by its nature, is about controlling your own character or characters. This is what posts in the RPF are. Auto-Hitting is using your character and its actions to directly affect another character. Because you “auto-hit” another’s character, you are forcing them to write on what you did. This is considered incredibly poor conduct, and will usually be corrected by a GM.

Example:
I threw a punch towards the man and it hit him hard, knocking him down on the floor.

This is an auto-hit b/c you not only role played your character, but you role played the other user’s character (the man getting hit) by knocking him down onto the floor. Only RP your character.

Instead: I threw a punch towards the man, hoping it would knock him down on the floor.

Here all you write is your own punch. You don’t say what happens afterwards, you don’t even say if it connected or not. That call is for the other poster, and perhaps the Game Master to decide.

#2.) Godmoding: This is the other big rule and the flipside to Auto-hitting. Again, every game has a rule prohibiting this. This rule is a call to reality and realism. While we play in fantastical worlds, generally the characters to be played need to be limited in some aspect. They need to have weakness and they need to conform to the basic principles of reality. It is no fun to interact with someone who is all powerful or invincible, and if more than one person is this way, God help us all if these two get into a fight. Godmoding rules allow for realistic gameplay and a sense of stakes to be added to RPing. Continuing with our example above

Example: The man’s punch flew towards me, but I turned into a ghost and it went right through me.

Now unless you’re playing a superhero or some supernatural type RPG, this can’t happen, well ever. Doing so is an incredibly cheap way to avoid taking some sort of damage, and will infuriate both the attacker and the GM like something awful. Additional types of godmodes include super-stamina, super-strength, super-agility, and super-skills. There are only so many Sith Lords in the galaxy, and chances are, your person isn’t one of them.

*Important Addition*: Godmoding also extends to character knowledge in game. Remember that your character is a limited being with limited information. While you as its writer can know what is happening to other players, your character doesn’t. Super-intelligence, super-luck, and ultra-deductive reasoning are all considered Godmodes that have the laws of probability against them.

Instead: The man’s blow hit me right in the nose, busting it pretty good. I shook off the blow, but kept fighting.

#3.) Attitude / Self-Righteousness: It doesn’t matter if you’ve been RPing for 10 years, or if you’re an admin on another site, if you haven’t demonstrated that you’re a skilled RPer here on these boards, don’t expect to be taken as such. The RPF is a “show us” type of forum, and you need to earn your wings before you will be taken seriously. The number one complaint I get from oldbies regarding new users is that they don’t want to be taught, and have “chips on their shoulders.” While this can go for any other forum on the internet, it bears repeating. As a new user, respect the norms and social structures of the boards you visit. Unlike other boards where you can be considered a “newb” for a long time, the RPF carries a pretty dependable guarantee that if you work hard and play by the book, you’ll find your e-status improved considerably. Coming in antagonistic, and taking a GM’s ruling angrily and/or personally will get you branded as a pariah very quickly. The RPF is a welcoming board, but it is a professional one as well.

#4.) Not Reading the Game: If you’re playing in a game, please read it, or at least your personal story arc. If the post you put up doesn’t coincide with the post a GM put up beforehand, this creates a messy discontinuity in your storyline that is always solved with some degree of annoyance. Either the GM has to amend his/her storyline to work around your new change, or you will have to repost/amend your post to work around the GM. It both cases, it’s a sloppy mistake that shows you aren’t paying attention.

#5.) Poor Spelling/Grammar: This might seem nitpicky at first, but it’s actually relatively important. People who you interact with in RPGs have to read what you wrote out in order to interact with you. Having a post then, riddled with spelling errors and leetspeek makes this process quite painful. It distracts the reader from your message, and (if the spelling errors are bad enough) can even render your post unintelligible. It is a clear mark of inexperience and unintelligence if your writing is plagued with these errors. Exceptions can be made on this when it comes to non-English speakers, but if it’s your native language, there is little excuse for sloppy spelling.

#6.) Unannounced Absences / Departures: When in a game, a GM generally has to plot and maneuver the characters who are playing it accordingly. This can sometimes be very complicated, and it usually requires a good deal of effort. So if a player stealthily leaves a game without any notice, your character gets left behind. Other players start to wonder if they’re ever going to get a response from you…. GMs start to wonder if you’re still playing or not. Usually the “dead-weight” characters get dragged along for quite some time before the GM actually decides to kick them. This is an inconvenience, and should be avoided if at all possible by the player.

#7.) Cliché Characters: In the writing community, there are a number of “cheap” character stereotypes that should be avoided. While these aren’t considered godmoding, they oftentimes do stretch the boundaries of reality. Usually these type of characters involve “wish fulfillment”, namely super-cool and powerful characters you would want to be if you could. While it’s not impossible for a 14 yr old Jedi Master to exist, it’s highly improbable. Likewise, naturally gifted fighter pilots that are also good looking and have a skill writing poetry are also hard to come across. While you’re encouraged to have creative characters, “over-powering” them is not the greatest thing to do.

Related to this is the overly dramatic character type. Characters that are orphans, perpetually angry, and consistently depressed might be more realistic than the teenage Jedi master, but certainly not original. Likewise with overly sexy women…. the number of supermodels in the world just isn’t a whole lot.

#8.) Over-Eagerness: RPing is a slower project. Because it’s a group endeavor, you necessarily have to wait for people in your group to get around and post in the game. Depending on player and game size, this could usually take anywhere from a day to a week. So Rping does require a bit of patience. Posting five posts in three hours wondering when a game is about to begin is probably overkill, and a sure-fire sign of newishness.

#9.) Side-scroll: Long strings of letters or symbols will be read in the system as one word, and will distort the screen so that users have to toggle with the bottom scroll bar to read the whole page. Although it’s a small thing, it effects a lot of people and can be easily avoided by using the horizontal rule html, {hr} (only w/ brackets instead of braces). That way the post can be easily read by everyone.

#10.) Excessive Out of Character (OOC) Conversations: RPGs are for in character posts (for the most part). People Role Play in RPGs and converse in Social Threads. So when you wish to talk to a fellow player about something, please PM that person, and not post it in the game. That keeps the game running smoothly, with no interrupting OOCs along the way. Oftentimes GMs will stop OOC conversations so as to prevent them from hijacking their games.

****************************
Let's give Imperial_Hammer a big thank you!! And if you have any questions, now is the time to ask!!

Thank you!

Hey Grapefruit!

Yah, thats totally how we do things. Communal story-telling in 3rd Person, with the best writing long and thorough literary pieces.

Stop on by! We're a very civil section of the board that is always aching for new users. New users = new players, and that is the fuel we run on!

Hopefully we'll see you around! grin
