Sometimes it's fun to post under another name, although usually there's not much reason to it.
Although, anything you do with a sock (if you broke rules, for example) is still credited to your main account; as it's still you. 
Otherwise, socks are mainly for when you get "gamebanned". In some of the games found around these forums, when you "lose" you receive a 24 hour gameban. During this time you may post with a sock - the gameban is just to add a little excitement and desire not to lose in the game.
