There have been many authors that have written Star Wars books over the years and I was wondering who was your favorite author and why? For me personally I can't decide. I like all of them for some reason or other. Timothy Zahn has the most authentic feel of the movies to me. I like that he has the first chapter start on a Star Destroyer or some Trade Federation ship in Outbound Flight. Matthew Stover's books are thought provoking. James Luceno brings in a lot of continuity points from other books and puts them into his books Aaron Allston and Michael A. Stackpole have starfighter action with a lot of humor in them. Karen Traviss has Mando's in them and a lot of action Troy Denning writes a lot of action and does a good Han and Leia relationship Drew Karpyshyn writes Sith novels pretty good. Michael Reaves has written in bools in the Prequel era. There are other authors that have written books but the only ones I could get on the poll.
I would agree that all those authors have each written at least one book I have enjoyed- and some more than one.
I'd probably have to go with Zahn overall, with Stover a very close second, then Allston, then Stackpole, then Keyes (though he's not on your list) then Luceno. Denning would be up there purely for his early work, but his more recent ones have somewhat soured me on him, unfortunately.
It's a tie between Zahn and Stackpole for best overall for me. I like all of Zahn's and Stackpole's books. Allston would be next. He isn't up there with the other two since his FOTJ books aren't as good as the Wraith Squadron books, the Enemy Lines duology and his LOTF books. All of them have at least one book I like if not more. Another person I would add if I could would be AC Crispin. I like her Han Solo trilogy. I also like Kevin J. Anderson's books
I was just about to make a thread like this. -_- DARN YOU, Force Smuggler!!11!! My votes went to Allston, Zahn, and Denning. Allston: His characters feel natural and has written some of my favorite scenes. Zahn: Like you said, his work feels like the movies. Denning: When he hits it his work is some of the best. (Vortex, Apocalypse, The Unseen Queen) When he misses he can miss kind of hard. (Invincible, Tempest, the Joiner King) Lucky for us he hits more than he misses.
Greg Keyes is a good author. His Edge of Victory duology and the Final Prophecy were some of the best books in the NJO. I was trying to get all of the current authors and authors that have written multiple books
Timothy Zahn, followed very closely by Matthew Stover, James Luceno, Michael A. Stackpole, and Aaron Allston, I love the Republic Commando series, but won't touch anything else written by Karen Traviss. I don't much care for Troy Denning, having only read SbS. I won't touch the ridiculous Denningverse, but I may read things like TG at some point. I don't know what to think about Drew Karpyshan and Michael Reaves, since I haven't read anything by them.
Steve Perry was a current author as of Death Star (fairly recent) but I don't know if he's still writing. Karen Miller's another author who was writing fairly recently.
Ha ha lol. Great minds think alike. Denning's best works imo are Tatooine Ghost, Star by Star, Inferno and and Apocalypse (Mortis thing aside). Since Mercy Kill has come out I need to read the X-Wing series in its entirety. There are so many great moments in them. I hope Scoundrels can keep the perfect streak going for Zahn
My favorite work by Steve Perry has to be Shadows of the Empire. Steve Perry is writing for other things but not for Star Wars. I'd take another novel or two. I'd also like another novel by Jeff Grubb. Scourge was amazing
Inferno and Star by Star are good, I almost forgot to list Abyss. =S Plus, he created Saba.....I can't not like him. I'm ashamed I have not ready any of the X-Wing novels, but I plan to correct that as quickly as possible. I still need to get Choices of One. =S
have to go for L. Neil Smith. Though I love a lot of other SW authors as well, his 3 novels as a whole are just the most enjoyable to me as a whole.
Saba is my favorite new Jedi from the NJO, hands down. If you like Allston's other books you will like the Wraith Squadron books. no jedi (as far as I can remember), just missions like the Wraiths sneaking on to Yuuzhan Vong controlled Coruscant except set during the New Republic era. Taking down an Imperial warlord. Choices of One is Zahn's best work since Hand of Thrawn duology imo. All of the books since HOT are good but Thrawn Trilogy is first, Hand of Thrawn Duolgy 2nd, Choices of One, then everything else.
I voted Allston, Stackpole and Zahn are close seconds. Choices of One actually soured me a little on Zahn and Stackpole hasn't written anything recently. I didn't like Conviction, but I went into the book with such a bad taste in my mouth because I love Tahiri and I didn't think I could take her character being sentenced as the title implied.
The Lando Calrissian trilogy was extremely enjoyable. More enjoyable than the Han Solo Adventures by Brian Daley
Tahiri is one of my favorite characters but they have given her the short end of the stick since TUF ended imo
She's crazy, I love her! I want a Denning standalone novel about her! That's why I was so disappointed by Crucible.... Enough from me, I've derailed the thread enough.
You are talking about Tahiri right? That is on a different quote so I'm a bit confused. We do need a book that focuses solely on her so she can get over Anakin and the stuff under Jacen and the sham trial
Tahiri got over Anakin in Force Heretic, largely. It still hurts, but she's not obsessed with her grief- until they decided to dial her characterization back to its most vulnerable so Jacen could transparently manipulate her. Sorry, love Tahiri, hate what LOTF did to her.
