Looks like they've improved the visibility of the line dividing each post, so the avatar isn't quite as important a cue that you're looking at separate posts as it was when we first started on this temp board. You could probably get away with a "no-icon" option, especially since it would likely keep the caption bubble background as a spacer above the user's name.
TFN boards were actually the only forums where I could not make my own icon / avatar and I have been part of many many forums. I found it weird and restrictive to be honest.
Yes, I'd prefer that as well. I never used an icon on the old boards, and rarely use one on any message board. If someone doesn't want to use one, I'd prefer that the default be none at all (i.e. just show name and title).
I think the "no icon" transparent gif icon from the old boards was one of the ones that got added to the list of selectable icons here in the last couple of days.

Meh, I kinda liked everyone having a Star Wars related icon from the gallery. I feel without it some Star Wars roots are lost.
As H_J says, there are still a lot of SW icons around. You don't have to have a gallery to choose from to have a SW icon. And on that note, is your icon SW related?
I hope it's not. It's kind of silly to force SW icons upon people. I used to think otherwise, but I've come around. Besides, this generates a lot more creativity.
Agreed. Choosing our own icons is one of the best parts of this XenForo move, IMO. And the old icons were tiny.
I'm going to be pretty devastated if I lose my Doctor icon It captures me perfectly and I've grown quite attached. I can't see any good reason not to let people upload their own.
me too. I never found an icon that really said this is me from the old ones and they were small. For me, oddly enough it's actually a big thing.
I still like seeing mostly SW related icons here, but I completely agree with this... and I came around on that position too.
I'm pretty much in agreement with most of the people here. It is refreshing to be able to upload our own icon. It allows the users to express themselves and let's face it. A little diversity never hurt anyone.
Well, if we can keep custom icons, I probably won't stick with my current one. I'll either go back to my SW one or get a better custom one. Either way, I've found that doing a Google search for the old icons works, as long as you know the exact name of the specific icon.
Yeah, all the old icons are still up on the server. Perhaps the icon makers would like to start creating higher-res versions of their older ones though.
