I don't think Luke needed to die in Vector Prime, but it does bother me that the Big Three are still hanging around in their 60s and 70s at the expense of their children. Two out of three of Han and Leia's children either going dark, dying or both? Seriously? One I could accept, two was over the top.

I also agree that it's silly to think that people wouldn't buy any more books taking place post Luke's death. It is possible to focus on other characters and have a good Star Wars story.

Indeed. It sucks, actually, because I think that abysmal name has stopped much development of the music of the GFFA. No one wants to develop sub-genres of Jizz.

I don't know, maybe I'm the only one, but I'd love to learn more about the music of the GFFA. Don't smugglers like to blast something while running from the Empire? Don't Jedi have background music for meditation?

Daniel Keys Moran developed a very good short story around a music aficionado, for example. I think he even commented something about that name keeping him from taking it completely seriously :)

I agree completely, but remember, there was a very large number of people (at least, if their claims can be believed) that quit reading Star Wars books because Chewbacca died. If that's just the sidekick, then I'm sure it would be worse for Luke.

Anakin Solo was going to be the main hero of NJO, but George Lucas believed that was too similar to Anakin Skywalker during the prequel trilogy, vetoed the idea, leading to the roles of Jacen and Anakin in NJO to be reversed. Michael A. Stackpole thought as I do that killing Anakin Solo was "a waste of character", another reason why I think very highly of him as an author.

What ends up happening with the Solo boys? They create a poorly written copy of Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars in Jacen Solo's transformation into Darth Caedus.

If the NJO would have been the end of the Star Wars timeline (or, at least, the end of Luke, Leia and Han), I think the death of Anakin, or Jacen had the roles not been reversed, would have been a great idea. With LOTF, though, it does indeed seem a waste, that both of those characters are dead.

There definitely is a balance to be found, I believe, in killing characters for emotional effect and not touching anyone. I like Stackpole, but my main criticism of the X-Wing series is that Stackpole, like Zahn, only bothered to kill characters he did not develop. It was a different story for Allston, but I couldn't help being annoyed that so much attention was drawn to the Rogue's supposedly losing members constantly, though most of them escape unscathed. I remember Wedge even giving a speech about "the fallen" at the end of The Bacta War, though the only character that had died since book 1 was, if I recall correctly, Riv Shiel, a character who had quite literally not even been touched.

For Anakin, I do like the idea that the most promising child of the era, one who is thought to be the "chosen one" of that era (this may be inaccurate, as I have yet to actually read the NJO), the child that very well may surpass Luke in the future, is killed. I think in a way the fact that he's killed before his time, with so much wasted potential, is the point in a way; heroes rarely die having accomplished everything they possibly can, any way. Not that I'm insinuating that Star Wars should be a grim reflection of reality, but I think that the young hero dying before his time has much more poignancy than killing the lovable side kick (Chewie) ever could.

But like others have mentioned, the whole gesture was somewhat wasted in LOTF. When the timeline continued beyond the NJO, then I think Anakin may be called a wasted character.

Good point. I'm also bothered by the fact that Ben Skywalker seems to the heir apparent now. Not that I have anything against the kid, but isn't this the sort of thing that Vergere warned against? A Jedi dynasty. The Jedi Order is NOT Hapes with a hereditary throne.

Getting back to the subject of this forum: I would LOVE to see flow-walking disappear. Especially the way it got bastardized by the authors in LOTF.

Actually, the people of the GFFA really like jizz. They just eat it up.
  8. instantdeath Jedi Grand Master

I wonder if Jizz was a long lasting genre, or if it was just a brief trend that the audience spit back out (And now I hate myself o_O )after that cantina song became too overplayed. Like the GFFA's disco.

My first time posting here so hello fellow Star Wars fans. I really do not care for the ending of The Force Unleashed 2. Until we get a 3rd novel I'm calling that book rebel propaganda because I can't see that ending at all. I'm good about suspending my disbelief about things in relation to Star Wars but that ending leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
The post NJO part of the timeline is messed up in my opinion but I still like it. Doesn't stop me from wanting to create a fan-fic series completely changing everything but it's cool. I also wouldn't mind seeing some of the alternate ideas for the NJO that are on here as fan-fics. Such as Luke dying in Vector Prime, Luke getting poisoned as well as Mara and having to go to the Unknown Regions to find a cure and leave everyone else to deal with the threat, Anakin surviving Star By Star just to name a few. Though if Luke did die instead and I read that back then instead of who did die I would have taken it worse than what happened back then.
I also have to put my vote down for Anakin surviving. Anakin was my favorite character but I wouldn't want Jacen killed in his place. Their debates made the first half of the series interesting. I am of two minds about Jacen, I hate and like him but the writers butchered his character so bad I gave up halfway through LOTF and was like whatever happens to him happens.

Except there was and remains a major controversy over Legacy's time jump, so that's probably ensured it won't be repeated so we're stuck with Luke, Han and Leia fighting evil until they're on zimmer frames and beyond!

Personally, I'd have ended the big 3's story at TUF, jump to Legacy and go from there onwards, but there's one problem: A century of relative peace isn't deemed good enough. Yet when the alternative is a lifetime of crisis, war and death for the character set, I can't help but conclude SW EU fandom did itself over on this. For all we say we want something different, when we get it we don't back it so end up with dreck like LOTF / FOTJ.

Do you need to ask? Erase the back half of Star by Star!! And Lomi Plo and Welk were absolutely awful characters, SbS would've been better off without them. Blow up Baanu Rass with a bomb, destroy voxyn, then get back in time to see Coruscant fall. Yes, I'd keep that, because I like how it represents how close the New Republic was to defeat. But Anakin should've survived, no matter what. And forget Abeloth, she gives me a headache. [face_not_talking]

I already consider TCW to be Republic propaganda. I want to see the Clone Wars, not whiny brats, western gunslingers in space, or a complete lack of disrespect for the existing Expanded Universe, that scarcely adds anything meaningful to the universe.

I could go for alternate histories, since I can't stand the current post-NJO storyline and I am rather annoyed by the NJO itself, i.e. the death of Anakin Solo, the portrayal of the New Republic, etc.
  13. Force Smuggler Jedi Grand Master

The original Clone Wars series was so much better. I don't think I've watched any episodes since the start of the 2nd season. I want to to get my own opinion on the show but I haven't gotten around to it. Yeah the new series throws a wrench into a lot of things. I'm fine with the way the NJO turned out but if Chewie or Anakin could have lived that would have nice. Troy Denning changed too much with Dark Nest trilogy. I hated the killiks, Raynar and Alema in that trilogy but they have redeemed themselves somewhat in my opinion
  14. OneSiouxFan Jedi Master

Most of SbS was a tactical disaster. Sending a team of, what, 12? With no reconnaissance done? Then, they risk 12 to save 2. Of those 12, 4 die on Baanu Rass, one becomes a Killik, one gets captured, one becomes totally unhinged, and one almost falls to the dark side. Yep, a total success.

Ben: I've actually thought about this all weekend, but I can't honestly think of what they've offered us that we haven't backed. It's been almost nothing but war since the start of the NJO. Most of us have probably read 'Millennium Falcon' and 'Choices of One', but those were only a one-off. I'd love to read a series about 'mundane' crisis in the galaxy. Labor disputes, minor political problems, even watching Tenel Ka try to keep Hapans in line would all make for a great series. You're right, though, the LOTF is mostly dreck.
  16. Revan_AnakinSolo Jedi Master

And as @YodaKenobi is fond of saying, the Yuuzhan Vong could have taken tissue from one of the cloned voxyn and restarted the whole species. I think I may know why it wasn't possible, but the point is valid.

But to what degree? If the LOTF/FOTJ books sell more and get more attention than the quieter works, for lack of a better term, DR will invariably draw the conclusion that is what is most wanted.

I stopped reading the big arc as of Betrayal, from what I've seen since it was a good move. The problem isn't that the smaller works aren't profitable, they must be, but they're overshadowed by the other stuff. If people are presented of a story about Luke, Han and Leia or no story, they tend to opt for the story. The latter option is the consumer one but fans tend not to act like consumers hence the potential for conflicts between the business and the fans. DR's hunch that: If we publish they will buy it - has worked well so far.

Of course this tends to give rise to the idea of: You want the EU to fail? Not as such, no, I want a change of contract for the books, this lot don't have anything new to contribute on the whole. Stories like Knight Errant? Would likely be published by a different company that had the contract.

I think I'd have one of the Solo boys still alive.
  19. OneSiouxFan Jedi Master

Ben: You're right, DR has a formula that sells, and we consumers keep going for it. We BECOME the lowest common denominator at times.

I told Jaden once that I wish that DR and Lucasfilm had the same enthusiasm for the characters that we do. At least when other authors (George RR Martin or JKRowling) wipe out characters, you get the feeling that they didn't REALLY want to, but needed to for the sake of the story. I'm not embarrased to say that I was crying during the scene where Harry Potter was digging Dobby's grave, because I got the feeling that Jo Rowling was crying when she wrote it. Except for Chewbacca, I've never gotten that feeling in a SW book.

How well did Knight Errant sell anyways. I remember seeing a lot of ads for it
