I kinda of like doing rough drafts in physical notebooks. It easier to keep track of changes, in some ways. But, yes, things like Open Office and Google Docs are obvious things for writers (and anyone) to use to avoid problems like that.
You can also use Microsoft Office for free on the Web, if you get a free Microsoft Skydrive account (5-25gb of free storage and it can be integrated right into your computer as a remote drive, on both PC and Mac). Between Skydrive's web-based Microsoft Office, that Open Office thingie, and Google Docs... everybody can have a word processor. Or, of course, you can be awesome and write everything on Notepad.
I'm all for the gritty reboot. Let's get this show on the road. You guys are like a bunch of hoarders. Leave those old posts and threads at IGN. The rest of us shouldn't suffer because someone is crying over some fanfic garbage they never saved. MOVE NOW! MOVE NOW! MOVE NOW!
Yeah, but all the people, such as gabe and Dark Lady Mara, who registered during the ubb days would probably appreciate keeping their accounts.
Not to mention that it screws up their current posting data, from what I understand. That could cause serious issues.
Having a reset might actually be a good thing. I bet some people are intimidated coming to our boards. A full reset makes everyone a noob.
Yes, but it also makes moderating problem users a logistical nightmare because of screenname changes. Thanks but no thanks.
I don't want to have to REPOST my fanfics (though I would revise one a little because of mixed up information) And my backups are on a computer that is not set up anymore. And as CPL_Macja said, it wouldn't only be fanfic that would be affected...but other sections of the forums such as....discussion threads like SOS Luke Skywalker....fan clubs in the EU Community, Original Trilogy and Prequel movie discussions, etc,. etc. etc
I have received word that the Libre Office program is in fact superior to Open Office. Among other things, it is said to handle the transitions to and from the Microsoft Office file types much better, which is pretty essential for those who hope to work in the outside world.
Hmm I don't think I've ever had a problem going to and from my OpenOffice to that. Details? I'm curious.
Ah I see. I have no interest in saving in docx, and OpenOffice being able to open it is good enough for me.
Apparently the other thing is for if you have "track changes" on and have heavily marked it up, but then need to open it in a non-Word program.
I'm going on record as saying , I HATE the look and feel of the temp boards ! I want the old board feel back!
I really thought I was going to hate it. I'm not someone who likes change at all. But I have to say, despite myself, I really love it. Even if no attempt is made to make the style sheets look more like IGN, I'm shocked to say I think I'll be okay with it. I like these boards.
I agree, I definitely prefer the clean, up-to-date look and feel of these boards to the old school look and feel of the old boards.
Well, nobody can recreate the feeling you got from the old board - after all it's your feeling. The only person capable of dealing with that is you. As for the look of it, meh... makes no difference to me, so long as people are posting.
