This isn't all that surprising. Pen and paper RPGs tend to cater to an older crowd (30-40 somethings) so it's a very smart marketing move on the part of FFG. Then you bring in the casual non-RPG Star Wars fans through the X-Wing starfighter game and the card game. Much smarter marketing model. To be fair I think WOTC recognized this later in Saga's run with their tactical minis games, but it was too late by then.

BTW, based on FFGs track record with 40K and WFRP3, there should be all sorts of companion books and adventures between the three core books to tide you over between releases.

Thirty bucks for a beta test? o_O Also, is it thirty per "installment?"
  3. The Loyal Imperial Census & Games General Manager

If they follow their previously-established pricing model, try doubling that.

Because his career before Endor is fully documented. Moreover, those ships simply weren't in use in any of the locations he was posted to.

Yeah I suspect the final price tag will be $49.95... maybe $59.95, but there's an awful lot of universe fluff that's not included in the beta book... the beta book is literally all of the rules plus a handful of write-ups. FFG does not skimp on the presentation and the final book will definitely be a thing of beauty.

Just confirmed with my buddy that there's very little universe stuff with the exception of starship write ups and weapons and gear. Very complete ruleset though with rules for Force based characters, droids, cybernetics, vehicle/starfighter combat.

    Waiting anxiously for my copy...

I might check this out. Am I the only one who'd like to see a FATE RPG in the SW universe? Although Evil Hat probalby aren't big-name enough to get handed a contract like that, and they als probably couldn't produce on that scale.

    This. Looks. Good.
Great art, innovative game mechanics (well, maybe the "custom dice set" not so much, looks like critical success/failure institutionalized to me; but the whole Obligation thing sounds neat) and a solid GCW focus... what more can you ask? Oh yes: making good use of the EU. Tick.

    Nice!
  9. gallandro Jedi Padawan

Agreed! Ordered it on Friday... looking forward to it.

BTW I declare your avater the BEST on the Jedi Council Forums... brilliant!

I don't have the money to order the beta, so can someone tell me what the balance is between rules-crunch and story flexibility? Are players going to spend more time working stuff out on calculators or narrating their successes/failures?

The art does, indeed, look amazing.
  11. gallandro Jedi Padawan

The game is much more narrative in its feel with just the right amount of crunch.

There's a good example of play on the Order 66 podcast. Basically you roll an amount of die equal to a skill or characteristic you are going to use (whichever is higher) and the lower of the two allows you to upgrade your dice. Then you roll a specific die for any advantages you may have in a given situation and a special die for any disadvantages... then all you do is add up your successes vs. failures. Tasks require you to get a certain amount of successes and obviously each success is canceled out by each failure. Additionally there might be certain hindrances or advantages that occur based on your roll.

It's really quite a simple system.

Sounds complex, but many systems do when you explain them, rather than actually use them. My only real reference point is FATE, so how complex is it compared to that?

If Steele ran any missions during those years that I DIDN'T play, I will feel cheated.
  14. gallandro Jedi Padawan

Based on what I have been told (I'll be getting my copy this week), the system is very easy to grasp and shares some similarities to FATE in that you are rolling a pool of dice and you need a certain number of successes.

Do we know when Age of Rebellion is expected to come out? The artwork I have seen in this thread is very impressive, so I would be eager to see this type of style used on the characters, ships, and locations that would be essential parts of the Rebel guide.

I stopped by the FFG booth, they said it should be out early 2013.

Age of Rebellion? Not this, but the next one?
  19. blackmyron Jedi Master

Sorry, I meant the Fringers campaign.

Ah. That's about in line with their usual release schedule, then.
