So basically we can expect Obi-Wan to be beaten up quite a bit in Season 5. I'm cool with that, just as long as he does some awesome stuff too. But I get the impression it will be a tough season for him. Hopefully it will be interesting and will explore his character more. Anyway, something I just wanted to throw out there is that I was conversing with a friend yesterday. She has never watched Star Wars. She knows nothing about it. And she ended up seeing the first part of 'Deception', so like the first 5-10 minutes or so. Her opinion of Obi-Wan was that he seemed 'stuck-up' and she preferred Anakin. Obviously she's basing this on 5 minutes of footage from the cartoon series. (I intend to get her to watch the films when we live together.) So I just wondered with other Obi-Wan fans how she could have come to the conclusion that he 'seemed stuck-up' based on the first part of Deception? Does he do/say anything that could give one an opinion of that?
It's his accent. I accidentally erased the Hardeen arc and the official board no longer offers it. Remind me of the first five minutes - we see Obi-Wan looking pensive in the opening teaser, then he, Anakin & Ahsoka are just walking along Coruscant, right? How far in did you get and do you remember what Obi-Wan was saying (just in general terms)?
She did mention his accent sounded strange though lol. I think she got to the bit just before he transforms into Hardeen and then stopped. They're walking along the street, Anakin moaning about another boring debate with the Jedi Council, they get fired on and Obi-Wan is saying 'any idea where that shot came from?'; Ahoska pointing out the sniper, Obi-Wan gives out orders to Anakin and Ahoska to flank and go on the streets and Obi-Wan says, 'I'm going after him.' Then he gets shot, then the funeral bit, and then he transforms and he's basically saying how Anakin's reaction to his death sold it for being real and that its important to keep him on the outside. She stopped watching after that bit and then said that.
Hmm, maybe a combination of him giving out orders to the others, then his "How was my funeral?" remark? One could see that as callous, considering the grieving WE the viewers saw without yet knowing the reason behind it. It could come off as insensitive.
That's a good point, Val. It probably doesn't show Obi-Wan in the best light. When she eventually watches the films it will be interesting to see what she says... She does like Ewan McGregor though so maybe that will be a bonus...
Well, a lot of folks weren't happy with Obi-Wan's light-hearted dismissal of his "death." I think I'd have liked it better if they took advantage of an actual attempt on Obi-Wan rather than staging one.
I'm glad Obi-Wan was a bit wary of manipulating Anakin that way. I think all of the Jedi misunderstood completely the impact it might have on him, and because they are so steeped in their "no attachments" philosophy, they didn't view their actions as I do, that it's wrong on multiple levels to toy with someone's emotions. That's not to blame Obi-Wan--I don't think he completely got it either, but at least he did question the idea of doing that to Anakin.
I don't mind that Obi-Wan gets beaten up as long as it does not make him look incompetent, which was sadly the case in season 4: first his not so well thought of attempt to free the Governor of Kiros and then he walks blindly into an obvious trap and is disarmed by cry the wannabe sith, Savage Opress, who should be no more than a midday snack for a jedi of Obi-Wan's caliber. Hopefully they'll treat him better in season 5, though after listening to Filoni's reasoning I doubt it. Anyway, here is my pic-offering to the thread:
How can one man be so gorgeous? He's like looking at a beautiful rose or an awesome sunset. I also love how, in the pics, you can really tell when he's in "Obi-Wan" mode or when he's just being Ewan (like the bedroom eyes Obi pic and the speeder pic). I haven't seen that much of TCW, and largely because they downplay Obi-Wan so much - I don't understand why. But I do wish they would quit making him look so weak - I would love to see some FF Obi writers write TCW..wouldn't that be awesome? Val, Ruth, and others taking the helm at writing scripts - it would be quite a different TCW, wouldn't it? Oh, I would want to see Anakin do what he does, of course, but to see Obi-Wan played out the way he was meant to be, and not someone's punching bag, (or only if he is able to turn it around on them) or blindly walking into a trap, etc. Perhaps some of the writers thinking comes from ROTS when Anakin is joking about the number of times he had to rescue Obi-Wan, but in my opinion (which I took from the book ROTS) that was because Palps kept setting up situations to send the team to trying to get Obi-Wan killed, but as Val said one time, Obi-Wan is like the proverbial cat with nine lives...he just keeps coming back. That just had to be the most annoying thing to Palps... Plot bunny, anyone? I could see a humorous story about Palps/ Sidious setting up all these traps to get Obi-Wan killed, and then his reactions when Obi keeps coming up not dead...
Ok, seriously, someone has to write that. It's too good an idea to pass up! I would attempt it but having only just got back into SW fiction, I'm not the best person and I don't really write humour...
Oh, I'lve thought of that (and in fact, need some similar set ups for Sids to set up "capture Ventress" scenarios for my 3rd of the Heart of the Jedi trilogy), but I'm not good at coming up with plausible set-ups and even worse at coming up with plausible escapes. However, I'll accept ideas via thread or PM if anyone wishes to contribute to the idea bank.
I sometimes wonder if Ventress had a crush on Obi-Wan.I have always wanted to explore that through writing, but I can never get my ideas to flow right.
That would be really funny in the right hands. I'd love to read a fic like that. Because that's what it really seems like, I do think Palps kept trying to make Obi-Wan dead and bloody hell, he just kept turning up alive! What did Filoni say? I don't want to watch the interview, I sounds like it might make me break something. Oh those pictures, see? Luminous(lol just reminded me of "luminous beings we are, not this crude matter"--there's Obi-Wan Kenobi looking like living proof)
They should have an episode on the TCW on Cato Nemoidia with Ani and Obi.I have read the version in a book(I forget what it was called) explaining Obi's line."That business on Cato Nemoidia, doesn't,doesn't count"
This hang out has a lot of estrogen. I like Ewan but IMO Obi-wan is a completely different person and they aren't the same. One's a character, one is an actor. I guess, that's all I have to say about that.
Labyrinth of Evil, and it was awesome. One of my favorite Star Wars books. As far as that plot bunny, I may just write it. I've written humor in the past and I would have way too much fun with an "Obi-Wan mentally pwns Palps" plotline.
Would love to see what is done with that plot bunny - it seems like I remember in the book right before ROTS, when Obi and Anakin were in the outer rims, That there was one part where Obi-Wan and Anakin were I think in speeders or something, and they were being chased by the bad guys, and somehow Anakin and Obi-Wan were separated. The bad guys were ignoring Anakin and targeting Obi-Wan - it seems like Anakin barely made it to Obi-Wan in time in that one...pretty obvious a Sids set up against Obi-Wan.. And I also remember Labryinth of Evil...loved the incident on Cato Neboidia......that was adorable. And yes, Obi-Wan and Ewan are two different people ( one fiction and one real), but can we help it if Ewan made Obi-Wan totally gorgeous, cute and adorable? I mean, really. No worries, we know the difference between the two and love Ewan just as much as a man as well as in the other movies he's done. I also love that he's happily married for nearly 17 years with 4 children...that just adds to his charm in my book. I mean, he's so totally gorgeous and could be such an egotistical a**hole about it, but he isn't. Lovely, lovely man.
