theres a difference though to being almost stoic and unnmovable to being outmatched

we see Palpatine and Dooku do flips (both older than Obi) aand they were still outmatched by their opponents

and as I said, the flips and acrobatics were aided by the force, not because Palps Dooku and Yoda were gold medalists at the couscant olympics
  2. General Grevious Jedi Master

Obiwan was much weaker than palps/dooku/yoda at this point though
  3. Sistros SWC Chancellor

    in the force?

    I don't really see why

just because he's not out killing droids doesn't mean he didn't meditate and practice the "inner" force
  4. General Grevious Jedi Master

It said on the wikki that he basically stopped training. I was trying to find it, but I remember reading that obiwan basically stopped training to avoid vader or the emperor from sensing him or luke.

Obiwan wasnt moving THAT slow in episode 4, looking back its really not all that slow
  5. Sistros SWC Chancellor

well if Obi did then it would make sense Yoda would too and since he's been watching Luke for a long time, prooved yoda used the force

unless yoda had security cameras installed at his homestead

we are well off topic :p
  6. General Grevious Jedi Master

using the force to sense someone and using the force in battle is very different. Also theyres nothing pointing towards yoda sensing luke. for all we know it is very likely that obiwans force ghost made a visit to yoda about the same time he visited luke at hoth
  7. Sistros SWC Chancellor

sensing and watching are totally different, especially planets apart :p

anyway as i said in the first post

my opinion :p don't need to debate how I view a lightsaber fight :p
  8. Yoda's apprentice Jedi Master

    My Top 5 ranked:
1 Darth Vader vs Obi-Wan Kenobi
2 Darth Vader vs Padawan Luke Skywalker
3 Darth Vader vs Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker
    4 Darth Tyranus vs Yoda
5 Darth Maul vs Obi-Wan Kenobi
  9. Viceroy Gunray Jedi Knight

    Vader vs. Luke ROTJ
    Yoda vs. Sidious
    Mace vs. Sidious
    Qui-Gon vs. Maul
    Obi-Wan vs. Maul

I chose these because I felt them to be the most tense. Perhaps I would've put Vader vs. Luke ESB in there, but the order in which I viewed the saga is kinda messed up. I went from ROTJ > TMP > ANH > ESB > AOTC > ROTS. I had already seen ROTJ when I watched ESB so this took away some of the tenseness in that duel for me.

Not many people seem to favor the duel between Yoda and Sidious but I have to say I really liked it. The back-story and knowing what was at stake was enough to make the duel a good one. Duel of the Fates added points as well.

It's interesting to see how the movies progress that for the first three he's "Anakin Skywalker" but then when he's duelling Obi-Wan Kenobi on Mustafar, even though he still looks like Anakin Skywalker, his name has changed to "Darth Vader" - perhaps signifying the inner change in Anakin. I've always believed, however, that Anakin spent those next 19 years trying to break free of his bonds, and only succeeded when faced with his son, who was the embodiment of his good side. Thus he became known as "Anakin Skywalker" again, and remember in ROTJ Luke burns his father on a pyre, like Qui-Gon was burned in TPM? He's burning Vader's armour but says he is burning Anakin, his father - again, a shift in identification in relation to the character's looks himself. The human man - Darth Vader and the "artificial" monster - Anakin Skywalker. Afterwards, we see the Force ghost of Anakin as he was, young and unscarred, before the tragedy that was his end, and it seems that he has advanced towards redemption and peace everlasting.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense, but just my thoughts!

He was dubbed Darth Vader after cutting Mace Windu's hand.
  13. Skywalker__Solo Jedi Knight

Actually, that's true - I had forgotten that. Thanks.

But what do you think would have happened had he saved Mace and let Palpatine die? Remember he was somewhat far into the Dark side then. Would he still continue his journey to become a Sith or would he have returned to the Jedi? That would in turn, however, change the fate of Padme and their children and everything that happened from ANH onwards would not have taken place.

I'm not gonna rank all of them, but I just wanted to say my favourite duel is probably Luke vs Vader in Empire Strikes Back. Like it has been said, it feels the most real to me. It also partially sets up their dramatic duel in Return of the Jedi.
I dunno, I think I just like it's retro charm. The music and atmosphere... and it has some great dialogue, particularly from Vader. And the environment is just... alive I guess. And of course there is the irony Luke is fighting his father, not his father's killer. And using Anakin's old saber as well.

Out of the prequels my fave duel is probably Anakin and Obi-Wan vs Dooku in Revenge of the Sith. Love the Return of the Jedi inversion. And there is so much going on between the lines. Just Dooku's perception of what is happening, and his back-story for one. I like the line "Chancellor Palpatine, Sith Lords are our speciality". Very ironic.
Another thing that's interesting about this duel is that there is stuff that isn't spelled out for us. It's a test for Anakin. Anakin uses the darkside to win. Anakin is qualifying as the new apprentice, as an opposite to Luke finally becoming a Jedi in ROTJ by throwing away his saber. What could contrast that more than Anakin taking Dooku's red saber from him and killing him with it in cold-blood. It's one of the highlights of the movie for me.

  18. Ulicus Jedi Grand Master

Vader vs Obi-Wan in ANH is, hands down, the most masterful looking duel in the entire saga. Each and every strike looked like either an intended deathblow, or an effort to reposition the opponent's blade to allow for a deathblow. In short, it actually looked like two people trying to kill each other. That anyone, including Lucas himself, prefers the unnecessarily flashy, over-choreographed and ridiculously-telegraphed pantomime of the prequels depresses me immensely.

Well, not really. It doesn't depress me at all. I think y'all crazy, though, because Anderson blows Gillard out of the water. :p

That being said, TPM at least offered us a good pantomime. Sure, it falls to pieces when you actually examine it, but it's an impressive spectacle regardless. AotC and RotS, though? Urgh. [face_sick]

As a sword enthusiast I agree with this

part of the reason why I loved the AOTC though is because it was so fake looking it was obvious they were going for the dance thing

the most realistic fight in PT is sids vs mace

    (apart from the whole acrobatics)
