hehe. I thought about continuing to argue about this, but decided that I'd said my bit. I'd be in favour of them returning and think it would be sad if they were left out on the basis of a false premise and over-zealous new-JCness.

If I may put it that way, moving to the new JC is a bit like moving into a new home. Of course the living room is going to be arranged differently (the Community forums and the like), and the size of your bedroom will change (your profile info and the avatar, for example), but you still like to have that old photo of you and your best friend (or signinficant other) on the vanity table, for old times' sake if nothing else. The registration date is like that old photo: something apparently useless that nevertheless holds a wealth of meaning.
So yeah, if we can keep it, I'd like for it to still be there. If not, I won't throw a fit (really, there are more important things in life), but I'll be saddened.
    Cheers,
    Lauré :)

IMO, considering it's apparently style-based, we can have the cake and eat it too, and have some styles with reg dates and some without them. Not every style has to be the same and that opens a whole universe of possibilities for banner makers (now "skinners", I guess).

Well that sounds like a reasonable compromise.

For the registration dates under people's names, I've lurked on the xenforo forums a bit, and apparently it's an asked for feature, but it hasn't been built into the board system officially as of yet.
That doesn't mean Grimby can't work something out though.

It's a switch. You can see it flipped on in the style "What Could Possibly Go Wrong?":p

    Really? Huh.
I must be a bit out of date then.

I'd like reg dates. I think they help identify newbies to help, especially if they seem to have no idea what they're doing.
But I don't really mind either way.

Just to clarify, I think the registration date should be visible in the user information pop-up... I just didn't think it was really needed on each individual post.
  13. Maulfly CR Test Mod

I see the issue of where to locate registration dates as a style choice. As long as users can find it, it doesn't really matter to me if it is in every post (like your login name or title) or if it is just viewable when someone clicks on your avatar to show your quickie profile. As brought up above, if you allow for multiple skins on this board (perhaps even allowing designers/artists to submit for approval) then some could have the registration date info in a new place (or their location info...or anything else that might reasonably be tacked on). The ability to change skins like avatars would then give the individual perhaps a little more control over how the JC displays for them if they decide they want to go with something other than the default skin.

I'd be more concerned if we were planning on not showing the registration information at all...partly for nostalgia, partly so us old senile users can be reminded who we used to post with back in the "golden" days, and partly so everyone knows who MIGHT be a brand new user which may need a little guidance navigating the boards. There used to be formal and informal groups of members who would keep an eye out for new users and offer assistance (or at least orientation) to the boards. It also helps to see who's been around for a while, should a new user want to seek out someone that might be more familiar with certain other users or board rules. In the past when I was far more active, I've had newer users come to me in PM asking for assistance about board-related things. Partly because I was active and they felt familiar enough with me based on my post, partly because they could see I've been here long enough that I might have useful advice. (Now I'm just some semi-random oldbie lurking in the cobwebs, scaring small children. :p )

And yes, if you go by a different name than what you did back at the old boards (and it's more than just adding a space or capitalization), it's very likely your registration date won't be accurate to the person behind the account...but that's nothing new as it happens with every sock produced since the beginning of the JC. Not so much an issue as a "tell me what I don't know" sort of thing.

I think reg dates should re-appear with our avatar pics. I never felt any cliquiness regarding them, or stars; I've only ever perceived that on social threads.

I like Maulfly's option of users being able to select via their control panels, whether their own date is shown or not.

I am not entirely sure if "Forum Merging" should be used as a support for any side of an argument exchange of ideas, since that turned out to be an April Fool incident.

If I change desks at work in an office move, I try to make my new location replicate my old one - PC, monitor, phone, picture of Amelia Pond and a Dalek [ahem] - so that I feel at home, and the same should hopefully be happening here, with our site move.

It will be easier for members if what they liked about the old place isn't too disrupted, and that "improvements" are not made at the expense of user experience.

I think I'm going to add the reg dates and stars in just for fun on the default style. This doesn't indicate an official decision has been made, I just want to see if anyone's opinion changes. :p

The Fanfic/RPF merger was an April Fools incident; there's still a serious discussion ongoing about merging the various eras of fanfic and that sort of thing.
  17. solojones Force Ghost

Yay! You should at least try it and see what people say :p
  18. Rew Jedi Master

I'm cool with the reg date being under the icon again, but seriously kill the stars. Those things were an eyesore.
  19. Sith-I-5 Jedi Knight

    :) That's good.

I looked up my Styles dropdown, and could not see the "What Could Possibly Go Wrong?" style that Ramza referred to, a couple of times.
  20. PADUA Jedi Knight

As long as I'm not discriminated against made fun of when I register as a new user on the old board I'm all good with this. What harm could be done?
