On average, how long does it take you to complete a card? I wanna get a general average so I can either step up my game or take my time. My Leia sketch took me I think a half hour or so.
  2. HanSolo29 Jedi Master

The black and white ones take me anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. It all depends on the subject matter and how much detail I want to put into each one. It's been tight to get them done, though, and I had to resort to doing a bunch of "quickies" (actual quick sketches) to get myself back on track. I hate doing that, but it's what needed to be done to meet the deadline. We were only given a little over a month this time around to do 100 cards. It'll work out in the end, though. I figured I will still have 80 nice cards like the ones I posted and the rest will be sketches.

The colored ones take me a bit longer(I'd say 2 hours at the low end), but that may be due to the fact that I'm rendering them purely in colored pencil from the graphite sketch to finish. I like the end result, though, so I don't think I'm going to change.
  3. TrakNar Jedi Grand Master

Okay, so my half-hour on Leia is right within the realm of average and thus doable. I may step it up, though, for the black-and-whites. Colored images tend to take me longer because I start getting extremely obsessive about the image. I need to find a medium where it's "good enough" and move on to the next image.

What are the average dimensions of each image? Size tends to play a factor in how long it takes me to draw something.

I do a single character sketch and it takes me 12 hours. . .I am so glad now that I'm not trying to live off this talent because I am too slow. ;)

For a comic page, it takes me about a day. Well, at least five hours. I asked around, and a day a page is about average, so I'm good there.
  6. LegacyJedi Jedi Knight

It takes me about an hour to do one of my sketches.

I know exactly what you mean. After doing these for as long as I have, you would think that I would have learned that once I reach a certain point to just leave it and move on. Nope! I'm still struggling with that.

As for the size, your average sketch card is 2.5"x3.5". It's a very small surface to work on and it may take some time getting used to if you usually work larger. I'll tell you what, once a face gets to a certain size on the stock, it gets to be a real pain to get a likeness.

I have the opposite problem. I have no patience. At a certain point I just give up and say, "Okay this sucks, but I am tired of working on it, so It's good enough." I need to work on that.

    Great drawings!
  9. TrakNar Jedi Grand Master

Ah, I'm used to working at sketch card scale, then. At the very least, around that scale. Most of my drawings tend to be a bit larger, around 3 or 4 x 5 or 6, if I ever took the time to measure them. I've worked at the sketch card scale recently as a test, and I liked that scale, and the sketches I did didn't take me very long. Sketch cards may be the way to go, then. I'll need to hunt down Topps at CVI, then. I have a portfolio with their name on it.

My computer had died at the most inopportune time and I missed out on quite a bit. I do want to say wonderful sketches everyone!

@LegacyJedi, nice work! Always keep drawing, it's like a muscle that needs exercising and don't be afraid to challenge yourself. It's like that saying: "The more you put in, the more you get out of it" :) I can't wait to see your Obi-Wan when you do get time to do him.

@TrakNar, that's a lovely sketch of Leia. Be sure to let us know how it goes when Carrie Fisher signs your sketch, I think she will love it! I wish I was going to Celebration... also best of luck with your portfolio.

@HanSolo29, it's great to finally see some more of your sketch cards. So much work in such a short time, I hope they are going smoothly. I do love how you got a 'cameo' appearance in the set!

I have to agree that knowing when to let go... just letting go of an artwork in general is one of the hardest things to do, especially when the deadlines are ticking. I had been notorious recently for working right up to the last possible minute with my last set of works, leaving enough time to get them professionally printed. It all worked out brilliantly in the end but it leaves zero room for error. As Ben Burtt had put it; "film's are not released, they escape", I believe the same can be said for art.

I need new glasses. I just got a trophy and I could have swore it said, "You have been awarded the Porn Queen trophy". After closer examination I realized it said Prom Queen.
  12. TrakNar Jedi Grand Master

Haha, knowing my bad eyesight, I would have misread it the same way! Already misreading stuff. Perhaps we should both make visits to the eye doctor.
  13. AG88 Jedi Knight

Ack! I had a huge fight with my eye doctor last year. He made up glasses for me which I couldn't see out of at all. He said, "It may take a month or two for your eyes to adjust."

I'm like, "What the hell?! I can't spend a month not driving and walking into walls". I have never EVER had a pair of glasses that I couldn't see out of at all. I demanded my money back and he refused. I told the office manager I would write to the BBB and any body else on the planet to let them know how they robbed me of $200. Two days later I get a $200 refund in the mail. But then the doctor turned around and tried to charge my insurance company and extra $200 for looking at my glasses and my eyes afterwards and trying to figure out the problem. I guess he thought they would just pay. But it was rejected and the bill sent to me. I'm like, "Oh no you didn't." I then put in a fraud report to the insurance company. I never paid the bill. He better not send it to collections. Jerk!

    Yikes!

I haven't had bad experiences with eye doctors, yet, knock on wood. The last time I saw an eye doctor was when I got my glasses about four years ago. Before that was when I had eye surgery. That didn't really work, so it needs to be done again to the other eye to "balance them out."

Until now, Medicaid has paid for an eye exam and new pair of glasses for me every two years. I no longer have that luxury, as the COLA on my disability this year put me over the threshold for Medicaid. Fortunately, my eyes aren't real bad (I can still pass the test for my driver's license without them) and aren't changing very fast, so I can wait a few years if necessary.
  16. Skywalker_T-67 Jedi Grand Master

    heh...I have 20/15 vision:D

Oddly enough, I'm the only one in my family who doesn't need glasses...I guess I'm just that lucky.
  17. TrakNar Jedi Grand Master

I have no idea exactly what my vision is. It's changing and crappy. Near-sighted with decreased vision in my right eye, poor depth perception, and the peripheral vision on my right side is all but gone. Woo.

Anywho, here's an in-progress pic of Cal Omas.

Ooo... that has a very "Dr. Claw/Inspector Gadget" vibe to it. I love the high contrast look.

Love the sharp contrast and the details. A great scene.

This is a big one I am working on in acrylic paint

Nice drawing...but I would suggest you get to an eye doctor. I'm no optometrist, but that doesn't sound good. I have had Iritis in both of my eyes (at different times) and I was told if I didn't get to the eye doctor when I did I would have had to have my one eye removed. I'll tell you...the second time I got it I was in to see the eye doctor as soon as I recognized the symptoms. Don't fool around with eye problems. Usually seeing an eye doctor is about $50 -$75 at one of these major eyeglasses chain stores. I now pay out of pocket because my insurance company wants me to see that crappy eye doctor that tried to rip me off.
