Most games I think would have to have multiple prefixes to lable them properly. For reasons such as Fins said above, also this isn't that helpful. Prefixes would end up being like isle toppers at a video store with those that are many things put in the oddest places to those that actually made or play them. After all, even with non-starwars games, what would you lable SotS ? Personally, I don't even know what to properly lable it.

It's just supposed to provide a quick reference label for filtering, not a comprehensive genre description. I mean, it's totally feasible to just do "Star Wars" and "Non Star Wars" and call it a day, I'm just aiming for something a little more nuanced.:p
  3. jcgoble3 Jedi Master

    My two cents:

While yes, a "quick reference" is what we're after, that quick reference needs to be ACCURATE in order to be useful, and the problems with accurate genre tagging have been well documented in this thread. While I was in favor of genre tags earlier, I've come to the conclusion that the only way we're going to get accurate (and thereby useful) tags is to limit ourselves to "Star Wars" and "Non–Star Wars" (and I'm going to insist on the use of an en dash there instead of the grammatically incorrect hyphen; see here for why the en dash should be used). Anything else will only create confusion.
  4. KiraRomar Jedi Master

Well, I like the genre tag. Also I wonder if anyone will filter Sci-Fi and not look at Thriller. And yes, there is a point, that the title probably has a lot more info than the prefix. My "Games" seems to have been vetoed, but I think to avoid this, we might aim for more general tags.

    Star Wars
    Franchise
    Original
    Community
    Social
    Contest
    Newbie-friendly

maybe? I mean we´ll have three games of ASotS soon and maybe four Mass effect games. But what would a "ASotS" and a "Mass Effect" prefix do for us, if all ASotS games are called Sins of the WubWub and all Mass Effect games are called MASS EFFECT: WubWub anyway? What would a Sci-Fi prefix do for us? What would games like ASotS be labelled anyway? Mystery? Thriller? Horror? Apocalyptic? Character drama? Drama? I think Sci-Fi would work, too. Or all of those when we can do multiple ones? The same problem would have raised for Ramza´s Summer Place and would be for the Dark Tides, I believe to a lesser extend. What would Excelsior be? Another tag Comics? If so, is TSG´s The Solid Flesh if it ever happens comic? Because it has an original hero in it, Fin´s Solid.

I am not opposed to the whole idea, I just see how it can turn out to be a bad thing. I must say, the arguments are slowly starting to turn me into the other direction.

I don't think we need a "Community" tag in the Roleplaying forum. I mean, there'll be like ... one thread. Similarly, we have contest games once in a blue moon so we probably don't need one of those either.

I'm not fond of Newbie-Friendly either, not because I dislike newbies, but I just think it's not a useful tag to have because it implies a split in the community. It implies newbies can join these games, but not those games, because they're tagged as "Original" and not "Newbie-Friendly" ... you know?

Related question: if we're going to have Roleplaying and Roleplaying Resource, will we be keeping Hoopers and TROTSTATEOTG? Will they be in Roleplaying? What about Jocasta's?
  6. Ramza FanAct Manager; Probably Going to Destroy Us All

That's an excellent question. I mean, I figured there must always be a Hooper's in Roleplaying but hadn't really thought about the others.[face_thinking]
  7. KiraRomar Jedi Master

Hm, I hadn´t thought it through. Newbie should go. When Contests get up, we should really think about having that. If it isn´t needed for anything else. Especially as I understood the "groups" wanna have contests too, at some point?

Community I actually thought might be things like Training games, adoption etc. too. And probably if a game rises to become a flagship one day . . . that might be the way to support it? I agree with a post somewhere on page one, still. We could need one. :) But that was just an idea. I just thought the word "community" is something I would click on, when I get here. You know? A place to start for people.

Two cents isn't very much, so you can bill me.

There should be a WOTG prefix.

    Just because.

We could add a Nostalgia only button. 8-} Would make filtering easier for old users.[face_party]
  11. TTemp Jedi Knight

So, anyway . . . I´d say we wait if the merger is an April´s fool´s joke and if not . . . we think how to stop it. :pIf that doesn´t help, let the TFN burn, we don´t need it anymore!!!!!!

    [face_skull]

    Love April 1st.
  12. Ramza FanAct Manager; Probably Going to Destroy Us All

    Stop the mods? YSLCATGOT!:p
  13. DarkLordoftheFins Jedi Master

When social order breaks down and everybody get´s infected, you´ll behind socks and try to get out of the RPF in time! But the time is now!

*spanish accent* VIVA LA REVOLUTION! VIVA! VIVA!

Yes. Then I could filter it and still pretend the glorious RPF of yore still existed. Good plan.

Exactly, Mr. Jello. That´s the idea . . . *coughs* No really.

Anyway, RPF. In the spirit of April´s fool I want all RPF stuff to be named RPF. [face_thinking] with the option to blend out prefixes, maybe?
  16. Ramza FanAct Manager; Probably Going to Destroy Us All

Temporary insanity of AFD now well behind us, I will say that of all the plans currently on the table I like
the best, although like Xan I'm skeptical of making Newbie-friendly a formal prefix under the single tag system. I think a distinction of its sort would be better as a voluntary addition to the thread title as per the GM's designs.
  17. jcgoble3 Jedi Master

Agreed on all counts, including putting "newbie-friendly" directly into the thread title for now. If we can gain the ability to do multiple prefixes later, then it would work as a formal prefix (as could one that simply says "accepting new players"), but that won't work until then.
  18. Mitth_Fisto Jedi Grand Master

On the board that has passed and shall rise again like Wallace, I think the system of GM's putting whether it was newbie friendly or not was a good one. Instead of newbie for a tag we could make it be ALL PLAYERs, or some such dribble to protect the sensitive proclivities of the word sensitive whether they be poster or player. Personally I relished being called a noob while I felt it applied and actually had an argument once that I was still a noob while someone else said I wasn't.
  19. Penguinator RPF Modinator and Batmanager

Newbie-friendly should be a distinction in the thread's title, in my opinion.

In terms of tags I think it's best if we keep it small and expand if and when necessary.
  20. DarthXan318 VIP Tech Person

I dislike the idea of player-opening-related tags in general (not just "newbie-friendly") because we do not have the ability to use multiple prefixes. Whether we have an "All Players" tag or a "newbie-friendly" tag or a "Everyone" tag, the result is the same: any game that chose to categorise itself "Star Wars" would by implication not be open to all players. Once we have the ability to use multiple tags, then I'd agree that it's a good idea, but not until then.

How about the addition of a "Crossover" tag? We've long had the problem of where to put crossovers that involve Star Wars, so that might be handy.
