Doctors beginning to use Obsidian instead of scalpels
Hey all. I had posted this in the senate forum but it didn't occur to me that it didn't have any political issue to it over there.Anyways, I thought this would be interesting to share. In one of my dads rock collecting magazines, it said that doctors, mainly surgeons are beginning to use Obsidian rock instead of scalpels for sugery because of the rock is sharper than the scalpel knives. Anyway just thought it would be interesting to those of you who like rocks.

I hope they clean it.
It sounds a little weird, but it makes sense when you think about it.

Hey - if it was good enough for ancient Egyptians 3000 years ago - it's good enough for me.

Monstera-Diliciosa: Thats what I'm worried about. But on the "Mineral Hardness Scale", its a 5 to 5.5
(10 being the hardest- 1 being the softest) and plus I'm sure they have some sort of machine that makes them really smooth,a rock tumbler perhaps.
The Fallen: It is true.About the Egyptians using them. Your right. If they could use them as tools back then, so can we. I mean the indians would use them as weapons and then in the Stone Age used them as tools so its like we are continuing the work of our ansestors, its just more evolved now.

God I hope you are joking about it being OK as long as it worked 3000 years ago with the Egyptians.
They also killed people who lost use of an arm, and poured dirty water onto open wounds because it's all they had to work with.

Well cost wise, I think using obsidian would be cheaper because how much do doctors spend on scalpels at least $5-$10 thousand a every month or two? Because they aren't sharp or they get rusted.I think by using obsidian, it will relinquish the high prices. And plus obsidian can be found in places such as Texas,Utah,Arizona,Colorado, and Idaho. As well as out of the country in places such as Scotland,Italy, and Mexico. Its usually found near volcanic areas but it still can be found in those places.

I have a few obsidian arrowheads. They're quite dull now, but I'd bet that they'd be sharp as heck when they were actually in use.
Obsidian is an igneous rock, meaning that it is formed by volcanic ash and the like. I can't believe I remember all that stuff I learned in the 4th grade.

I found an obsidian arrowhead that actually was still sharp! It cut my finger. My professor thought it was about 800 years old.

The Aztecs used obsidian for their sacrificial knives.

Okay, I just looked it up.
Obsidian is already used in eye surgery because it is so much sharper and cuts evenly letting the healing occur more rapidly.
Also because it has many of the same properties as glass it is quite easy to fracture into peices that are workable.
And I do believe they take the precautions people are worried about.
For the record, the obsidian bladed weapons of the Aztecs were litterally able to decapitate a horse.

I've been cut by a rough piece of obsidian before. It hurt like a mother, but it was a clean "neat" cut. So it makes sense to use something like that for a scapel.
