I think it's easier to try to pin your crimes on these sorts of excuses now than it should probably be. That's not to say a fair share of cases aren't due to mental illness or other such circumstances (situations that wouldn't necessarily have been picked up on in the past), it's just that a) lawyers will seek to get anyone off on any technicality they can slip through on and b) some people seem happier to attribute terrible crimes to illness rather than simply one bad person. Illness is easier to accept than the baffling fact that some people are just bad apples... people to whom there can be no excuse offered. 	Part of why this stuff is happening is because we live in a culture of fear, violence and death. Just look at what comes on our TV screen, at how much violence is portrayed on it on a daily basis. Look at video games like Grand Theft Auto that reward random shootings. Look at our music, which is almost Klingon in it's glorification of battle - gangland and otherwise. 	We can't run our society, and decide upon the boundaries for the vast vast vast vast majority, on the basis that a violent TV show or video game might provoke lunatic action from one individual. Seperation of art and real life is something that 99.9% of the population can do without a second thought. 	I guess my point from earlier was that Kent University was a BIG thing back in the past. We didn't have mass school violence on the scale of that very often. 	There was also the shooting from the bell tower in Texas (can't remember which school)...and let's not forget the riots during the days of integration. There has always been violence, but not quite on this scale. I mean, how many grade schoolers did you know who brought weapons to school? Not many.
