Diesel submarines, when using their battery are virtually silent given that they have little to no machinery noises. They are vulnerable to prosecution while snorkeling, however, but this this vulnerability has been significantly reduced in recent years with technological advancements in both battery life and diesel quieting. Today's modern diesel submarines are incredibly quiet. That said, most still have a finite range and require periodic snorkeling in order to recharge their batteries.
