In Codename: Iceman, why would you activate the silent drive, stay below the thermocline later, keep your speed at 5 knots, if you still got picked up by the passive sonar on surface vessels?

I did everything a good skipper would. Why would this accurate simulation fail me?

Can I ask a question?

I am interested in periscopes. Are they still in use (in modern 21st century submarines) or has some advanced technology made them obsolete?

Have you heard of any of submarines encountering or, have been attacked by giant squid?

No, because enemy subs would be able to detect the urine and/or poop hitting the water in the toilet on their sonar. It would be a dead giveaway.

I have a sub related question:

1: Of what is a submarine's hull made.

2: Given that all matter shatters and a given sonic frequency and given that sound moves so well underwater, what would be the feasibility of a sound-based weapon that can shatter sub hulls?

Souderwan posted:
s65horsey: It depends. We go out for a few weeks at time for exercises and the like. On mission, we can stay deep for as long as we have food. I won't say how long that is. wink

3: Is there a cannible contingency in the case you run out of other consumables?

1. High-tensile strength carbon steel.

2. Hats off to you for asking the most original question I've ever been asked!! applause The short answer to your question is that it's not very feasible for a few reasons:
a. Metals don't respond the same way that glass does (glass isn't really a solid) and so isn't going to shatter, per se. A metal may develop cracks under cyclic stresses from a focused beam of sonic energy in the metal's resonant band, but it would not shatter.

b. While I don't know the exact resonant band of the particular metal that makes up a submarine's hull, the frequency would undoubtably be very high in frequency. It turns out that there is a direct relationship between attentuation and frequency (this is true of all wave functions, including the electromagnetic spectrum which is why we don't have light-based weapons but we might one day have particle weapons). What this means is that the higher the frequency, the more rapidly the signal will get attenuated as it passes through a given medium. As a result, even if you could develop a weapon that operates at the submarine hull's resonant frequency, the weapon would have to be incredibly close (as in physically in contact) to the target.

c. Other than the frequency to cause a material to shatter, you also need a significant enough amplitude (energy in the signal). The sheer mass of metal involved would result in a prohibitively massive amount of energy in order to use focused sound energy to shatter a hull with current technology.

Hope that answers that question for you. wink

3. We do. We start with the unqualified people (those who can't stand a watch), then work our way up the chain of command.

Smart-aleck remarks aside, yes. I don't think you want all the details, but we have a sanitary system on board. We actually take showers, too. wink

Have any whales humped your sub yet? It happened to a sub that a co-worker of mine was stationed on once and so he now tells everyone that he was involved in a whale gangbang, any chance you can lay claim to being a participant in such an event?

laugh

Umm...no, my sub hasn't been humped by a whale. I suspect your buddy's sub didn't get humped by a whale either. Side note: Whales (and other biologics) tend to look like submarines on a sonar display. If we picked up a whale, we might think it's a submarine and shoot a torpedo at it (it's been done in exercises before).

And for those of you who worry about these things, whales tend to stay out of our way pretty easily--they're far more maneuverable than we are. wink

What kind of testing does the Navy do for recruits, to make sure they don't show signs of possible claustrophobic tendencies?

Have you ever been onboard a sub where someone freaked out, while the sub was submerged?

We don't really test for claustrophobia. Being assigned to a submarine is all-volunteer. So if you sign up, we assume you're not a jackass signing up while being claustrophobic. That said, every so often you hear about some idiot who freaks out. We usually shoot that guy out a torpedo tube. Problem solved.

Yes, we still use periscopes. They have the advantage of allowing us to look at the rest of the world without the rest of the world seeing us. Our modern persiscopes, however, are not at all like your grandpa's periscopes used in WWII. We have lots of tools I can't tell you about but trust me that they're pretty cool.

One big difference between the most modern periscopes and older periscopes is that modern periscopes are non-penetrating. Every periscope from WWII submarines to the SeaWolf Class submarines have a periscope that penetrates the pressure hull. In the old WWII movies, when the periscope went up or down, water would gush into the ship. Seals have improved over the years and we don't have water gushing in anymore, but the idea is still the same. Recently, periscopes have been designed that do not penetrate the pressure hull, instead relying on fiberoptic technology to transmit visual information to the inside of the ship.

Hope that helps.

I wish! tongue

If you're too tall, that's too bad. Truthfully, that's the long and short of it. Some really tall guys choose to sleep in the torpedo room where you can set up bunks with longer legroom. That only works if you aren't carrying around a bunch of torpedoes, though. wink

Souderwan;

1) Who's a better Clancy skipper; Bart Mancuso or Dan McCaffrey? I assume you've met them both.

2) How did a Collins-class diesel boat manage to "sink" a Nimitz class carrier in AUS-US wargames?

3) What's the best submarine film? I liked Crimson Tide up until the stupid mutiny stuff, but you're the expert.
