Souderwan;

1) Who's a better Clancy skipper; Bart Mancuso or Dan McCaffrey? I assume you've met them both.

2) How did a Collins-class diesel boat manage to "sink" a Nimitz class carrier in AUS-US wargames?

3) What's the best submarine film? I liked Crimson Tide up until the stupid mutiny stuff, but you're the expert.

E_S

1. Easy. Bart Macuso. 300 yds away from a Russian Typhone, proceeding to PD without a baffle clear, cool as cucumber. And he knows Morse Code that he can send through his one-of-it's-kind periscope? The man's amazing!

2. I don't know the specifics of that one, but it doesn't surprise me honestly. It's awfully hard to find them pesky diesel boats and if you don't have another submarine out there hunting for it, you can rest assured that the carrier's in trouble (which is why we normally have a submarine out there doing some serious hunting). If it's just a diesel vs. a carrier, it's a pretty one-sided fight. Proof positive that submarines are teh roxz!!

3. Tough question. I'll break it down:

1. Best overall submarine movie--Das Baut
2. Best nuclear submarine movie--The Hunt for Red October
3. Best submarine comedy--Down Periscope laugh
4. Best attempt at a real submarine movie--U571
5. Submarine movie with the most implausible plot but coolest characters evah!!--Crimson Tide

I understand that subs are single gender only vessels. Do you think they would ever have a sub run by all females?

That's not entirely true. US submarines are male-only submarines. The Aussies have women on their boats (though they don't go on 6 month deployments like we do). Creating a female-only submarine would be a challenge but certainly not out of the question. The issue would be developing a command crew. It takes years for someone to learn enough about submarining to safely take a boat out to sea and do the business. A CO usually takes nearly two decades to be ready. XO's are at about the 15 year point or so. So it's a non-trivial thing. CO-ed submarines are even harder with significant challenges to overcome (the challenges multiply exponentially the longer you stay out to sea). That said, I wouldn't be surprised to see women on US submarines in a couple decades.

No. They're long, black, hard, and full of seamen.

So basically, the Navy has a lot of seamen on its hands?

More seamen than a teenage boy watching Cinemax.

Wait, I thought everybody had to be able to stand a watch on-board a boat?

And which would you rather serve on, a fast attack, or a boomer?

1. You have to qualify to stand the watch. Yes, everyone on board has to be physically capable to stand watch and pretty soon after they get on board, everyone gets qualified non-critical watchstations. That said, the true measure is when you're submarine-qualified, i.e. you earn your dolphins. Before that, you're just a NUB (non-useful body). Hazing is strictly forbidden, but NUBs have to earn their place in the brotherhood. (technically, we don't call them NUBs anymore--not very nice. We usually just call them non-quals.)

2. Easy. Fast attack. Fast attacks get to do the cool stuff that if I told you about, I'd have to kill you. Much cooler than punching holes in the ocean on deterent patrol. That's not to say Boomer missions aren't important--they are. It's just not as exciting as launching TLAMs on the bad guys. tongue

Have you ever done one of those emergency ballast blows, so your sub kinda leaps out of the water, like the Dallas did in The Hunt for Red October?

Not really. The only people who have their own quarters are the CO and XO and the XO usually has to share his room if we have VIPs on board. There are three staterooms on a fast attack submarine and that holds 3 officers each. That accounts for four Department Heads (DHs) and 5 additional Junior Officers (JOs) who are usually the more senior JOs. The other JOs share a bunk room called 9-man ('cause it has 9 racks or beds--get it? wink ). The Chiefs have their own Chief's Quarters that hold about 15 chiefs or so. The rest of the crew sleeps in berthing. There are enough racks in all for about 120 people (that's about all the space we have). Since there are usually up to 150 guys underway at a time, the junior enlisted guys sometimes have to "hot rack". Hot racking is when three guys share two racks on a rotating basis (while one guy is on watch, the other two get to sleep in their racks). Some guys choose to sleep in the Torpedo Room (lots of space when we don't have lots of torpedoes) rather than hot rack.

We also pool our money together for big purchases. tongue

The Captain never says "Dive! Dive!" into the 1MC. That's the job of the Chief of the Watch. tongue

Actually, yes. Three times. It's required to be done every so often to verify that it works. It's pretty danged cool. grin

Way more fun than a man should be allowed to have! It's like the best roller coaster! The only down side is that it's over before you know it. sad

I met a chief that was on the sub that they used as the USS Dallas. He said they did it in one take and the movie people were surprised. And what's your job?

sif it's Mancuso! MacCaffrey was popping fish after fish at pursuing Russian subs which protecting the wounded USS Boston. In a war, no less.

Lousy Russians with their bid to grab oil and their red storms which are rising.

And no, it was a war game so the Collins got inside the carrier battle group, so past the submarine on defence, to pop a fish into the carrier. I gather the USN was a tad annoyed at that. Lucky we're friends, right? wink

I have another question for you:

What's a more effective antisubmarine weapon; a Mk-48 Torpedo or the ramblings of Bobcat Goldthwait?

Whats the best fiction book in regards to actual submarine tactics? Whats the worst?

Also, why haven't you found Atlantis yet?

I'm a submarine officer. I was a JO on my last tour and I'll be going back as a DH in about a year or so. The officers are the ones that are responsible for the tacital driving of the ship--we give the orders to make sure that the ship is on the right course, speed and dept. That's the big flick idea, anyway. grin

Sure. Except that in real life he wouldn't have hit the broad side of a barn the way he was going. Plus, it's much harder to be a submarine captain in peace-time than it is to be one in war. A wartime CO just needs to put a fish in the bad guys. The peacetime CO has to make sure that he doesn't give anybody a reason to want to put a fish in him. wink

Yeah, I'd say so. It's not surprising that you got a diesel by us in war games. Diesels are awfully quiet. A proficient diesel driver can pose quite a problem for us. That said, you'd probably find it a bit harder to do the same thing against our later classes of submarines now.

laugh Bobcat, hands down!! His voice could be that secret sonic weapon LemmingLord was asking about.

1. I enjoy the Patrick Harrison books (Seawolf was pretty good) but none of them are really accurate when it comes to tactics, honestly. It's funny, but Clancy does a better job with Russian tactics than American (I sometimes think it's intentional). The worst? Anything not written by Clancy or Harrison. One wonders if these people ever even saw a submarine sometimes.

2. I'd tell you, but I'd have to kill you.

It's because you're scared of Namor, isn't it?

It couldn't be Aquaman, nobody is scared of Aquaman.
