This is tough...I'm pretty sure most of my questions you're going to say you can't answer them so I'm trying to come up with ones you can answer. I apologize if you've answered some of these already its been a rough couple of days working 13 hour shifts.

How many men does a typical submarine carry?

What are the advantages of being on a submarine as opposed to an above water ship? (or disadvantages)

Is there any special ceremony for "christening" a new sub? I've heard of the ones for the other ships, but not a sub.

I haven't read through the entire thread so I don't know if this question has been asked, but are your ears popped a lot? Cause it seems to me like they'd be extremely prone to popping under all that water pressure.

1. For as long as I’ve been in the Navy (11 years) I’ve been a submarine volunteer. That said, I’ve only actually served on a submarine for about 3.5 years. My first year and a half in the Navy was taken up with Nuclear Field ‘A’ school, then Nuclear Power school and finally prototype. I got selected for commissioning shortly after I completed prototype and was selected as a staff instructor. So I went to college for 3 years and got my commission. Then I had to go back through the power school and prototype path for officers. After completing submarine officers’ basic course, I went to a submarine and did that for 3.5 years. Now I teach submarining to other officers and will continue to do that for another year or so. Then I’ll go back and serve on a submarine again as a Department Head.

2. Best job on a submarine, hands down, is officer of the deck (OOD) on the surface. There is nothing better than driving the submarine at night. You’re on the bridge of the submarine, wind blowing in your face, stars everywhere, blue-green bioluminescence trailing behind you, and dolphins dancing in your bow wake. It’s just…amazing. I love watching the sunset from the bridge, too. The amazing colors that are painted across the sky can bring a grown man to tears.

3. Hmm…there are quite a few bad ones, depending on your point of view. The normal job that sucks is TDU (trash disposal unit) operator. You have to load up all the trash that gets generated, compact it, then stick it into the TDU and flush it out of the ship. It can be a pretty disgusting and largely unrewarding job. The absolute worst job I’ve ever seen, though, was once when our Sanitary tank got clogged (some moron flushed a T-shirt). One of my auxiliary division guys had to enter the tank wearing breathing protection and remove the obstruction. Even while constant ventilating the ship, the stench was just… sick Let’s just say I’m glad that’s not a routine job…

No worries. I like talking about submarines. wink

1. Los Angeles Class submarines are designed for 140 men. An Ohio class is designed for about 155 men. The Seawolf targets about 130 men, and the Virginia class is designed for about 134 men. In reality, we usually operate with about +15 or so. So for a Los Angeles class submarine, we’ll typically get underway with about 150-155 men or so.

2. I could write a dissertation on that one! laugh I’ll just highlight, instead. wink

The biggest advantage to being on a submarine is stealth. Submarines can go places that other naval vessels can’t go and do it undetected. That very fact makes us an excellent deterrent. We can shut down an entire area of water just by letting it be known that we’re out there…somewhere. The largest disadvantage is that submarines are usually at a speed disadvantage to just about any other vessel out there. If a surface ship manages to find us and go after us, our best hope for survival is to run away and hide.

3. Submarines go through the same kind of ceremony as a surfaced ship for christening. happy

My submarine? None, really. Even with a full out TLAM strike, we’d only level a few buildings. A typical Ohio class submarine, on the other hand? Most of them.

Good question. When we’re deep, the answer’s no. In fact, going back to s65horsey’s question, that’s one of our disadvantages. When we’re deep, we’re largely cut off from communication with the outside world (we can receive some VLF and ELF signals). To communicate (and this includes connecting to the internet), we need to come to periscope depth and raise an antenna. Doing this allows us to use higher frequency radio waves which enables us to do communications.

No, your ears don’t pop much. By and large, we don’t suffer many pressure changes. The primary reason for this is that the atmosphere on a submarine (including pressure) is very tightly controlled. I could explain how, but it’s a long discussion. Suffice it to say, rapid pressure changes that would cause your ear to pop only happen if we open the ship’s internal pressure to the atmosphere (such as opening a hatch).

I kind of addressed this earlier:

Souderwan posted:
do you have your own private quaters?

Not really. The only people who have their own quarters are the CO and XO and the XO usually has to share his room if we have VIPs on board. There are three staterooms on a fast attack submarine and that holds 3 officers each. That accounts for four Department Heads (DHs) and 5 additional Junior Officers (JOs) who are usually the more senior JOs. The other JOs share a bunk room called 9-man ('cause it has 9 racks or beds--get it? wink ). The Chiefs have their own Chief's Quarters that hold about 15 chiefs or so. The rest of the crew sleeps in berthing. There are enough racks in all for about 120 people (that's about all the space we have). Since there are usually up to 150 guys underway at a time, the junior enlisted guys sometimes have to "hot rack". Hot racking is when three guys share two racks on a rotating basis (while one guy is on watch, the other two get to sleep in their racks). Some guys choose to sleep in the Torpedo Room (lots of space when we don't have lots of torpedoes) rather than hot rack.

We also pool our money together for big purchases. tongue

I hope that works for you. If you need more detail, just let me know. wink

If you were in charge of what subs were going to be built which class would you have gone with, the new Virginia class, or the Seawolf class? Why?

This is one of those times that the guy in charge really got it right. The Seawolf is an impressive machine by any measure but she was designed to deal with a cold war menace and is almost entirely a deep water anti-SSN submarine. As a result, the Seawolf isn't particularly versatile and doesn't work well for many of the missions the Navy has and will assign to submarines in future. The Virginia class submarine is immensely versatile and can go places and do things that the Seawolf cannot. The Seawolf is a more powerful ship, but the Virginia is a better one over all.

Actually, yes and no. I don't want to go into too much detail (classification reasons) but it's absolutely true that you could theoretically avoid getting blown to smitherines by a torpedo if it managed to hit you before it armed. Now the whole part about turning into the torpedo? raised_brow For a whole bunch of reasons that's just about the dumbest thing you could possibly do (some of the reasons would involve a long boring discussion that may actually be classified anyway). Let's just say that the line between absolute stupidity and bravery is very, very thin. Made for a superb dramatic moment though, didn't it? wink

shock blush You don’t pull punches on the “delicate” questions, do you?

Out of respect for my fellow submariners, I won’t directly address your question. However, we do have some privacy—our racks. Each rack has an individual curtain and affords a guy a place to sleep without too much interruption. What people do behind their rack curtains is entirely a private issue. wink

It should also be noted that we love pulling into ports and meeting local girls. tongue (not that I do that sort of thing…. )
