Because there should be one so that users such as Spiderfan, Jesse, and Andalite can discuss filmmaking amongst themselves in peace without fear of getting off-topic!

Well there are also threads that pertain to topics that would be more suitable for other forums, so I figured this would be okay. If not, oh well.

I would not mind such a thread, although it might get a bit boring because as you said I think there's only three or four of us, although I am sure there are others. Anyways I think this should be fine because the Fan Films forums are about people who make fan films, and I don't know about Spiderfan or Jedi Reject Jesse or other film folks here but I don't really have any interest in making fan films.

I've been thinking about what I'm going to do after high school and I can't think of anything that I could enjoy except filmmaking. So it's off to film school I go, whichever one it may be. I've had some friends get rejected from some schools just because they are from Alabama, so it should be lol to see what happens when I start worrying about applications.

Well don't limit yourself to the major programs like NYU and USC. I went to a very small school that hardly anybody has heard of, but they had all kinds of equipment and I had the freedom to make my own movies starting freshmen year. By the time I graduated we had like 7 or 8 Panasonic DVX100's along with a Canon XL2 and a 11 or 12 XL1's. Those are nice cameras. Some places don't let you touch a camera until you're a junior, which is absurd in my opinion. Look for any program that allows the students a lot of freedom and gives you equipmemt access early on. I made short films as a freshmen and sophmore which sucked, but I learned a hell of a lot doing them, and my projects the following two years turned out a lot better because I went through that.

I agree! I haven't ever really made an actual film off of the computer except for that one rip-off of the Ducktales Aladdin movie when I was five, a stop-motion LEGO Star Wars project, and a swordfight in sixth grade, so the experience would be very beneficial and, perhaps, necessary.
edit - Ha! A mini-topic thing. Did you (you applying to anyone) make any "movies" as a child/teenager?

I think if we steered the direction of this thread as part advice thread for those seeking help with various film making problems that don't pertain to the Fan Films forum (Slimybug's issues with WMM) and another part filmmakers social thread to share our musings with exploring the craft and given updates on our individual projects. It may also represent the opportunity to showcase our work for fellow filmmakers and get advice or opinions on how to better improve upon a work in progress.
The Fan Films section tends to be effects heavy (I know they are trying to veer the whole thing towards a larger picture of the craft) but for those looking for help or conversation pertaining to that outside the realm of Fan Films such a thread on the JCC may serve a better purpose. Not to mention the Fan Films section seems rather cliquey to me.
To answer the mini-topic I had a hankering to make movies since I was a kid. I just never had the means. I would mug in front of any camera I could. But when I got to play with a camera I found out its more fun to lead the movie than be the movie. When I got to highschool I took what ever media course or course with editing or a camera I could find. I only made a few things, certainly nothing of any value, but they were mostly learning experiences.

I never did anything with filmmaking as a kid or as a teenager. What I always did was writing. Before I knew how to write, I made little books with crayon drawing that told a story. So I always wanted to be a writer, and at some point I figured it would be cool to do screenwriting, which led me to want to make movies.
Actually, I scanned this awhile ago, it is a cover to one of my first "stories" which is very very very old.
Godzilla wins in the end by throwing the lava monster into the ocean. Clever plot twist indeed.

I've always wanted to do a stop-motion thing, I love those. Looks way too time consuming though.

I was involved in our high school news broadcast thing in HS!

I was also writing as far back as kindergarden when our teacher gave us paper to make stories with. She was very strict about using words though so all the little drawings had words. That was the same year I made the rip-off of Ducktales Aladdin (or whatever it is, it has to with magic lamps) using toys and a huge, bulky 1990s video camera. In 1st grade we had a computer class where I started writing constantly. I got the Lego Studios kit in third grade for Christmas, and I did a whole bunch of crap with that, mostly stop-motion animation. Finally, by 2003 I saved up enough money to buy a digital camera, which I used to make a very badly choreographed swordfight. By a forest next to a lake. Yay for reinforcing stereotypes!
But, outside of that, all my "work" has been on the computer and made with the Sims 2.
