The only one I could think of off the top of my head would be Requiem for a Dream.
AMERICAN BEAUTY and THE GRADUATE and INTO THE WILD
All films that address issues in American society and disenchantment with the American dream - especially materialism.

Right. Those are obviously some really good examples (kind of gives it away when 'American' is the title, huh?  ). I think these all play into the kind of disenchanted American Dream motif. But as I said, there are just all kinds of American film types and motifs. Although I think this is definitely the central modern one.

Make it a trilogy.
And follow the formula. Watch the Scream movies, you'll learn what an elementary trilogy is by watching those movies. 
I have 2 projects on the backburner that I still have to edit; and writing a sci-fi pilot and a sitcom pilot at the same time......

Oh I stayed up like two nights in a row and I'm all caught up on Weeds.
I really, really, want a beat up van now.
Ah summer. I'm catching up on all of the quality TV I've been missing.

Well I have the benifit of working at a library where we carry the complete season boxsets of like every show in the world. And I don't have to check them out one disc at a time like the rental places.
