I have decided to stay at this job at least through August. I got offered to be second shooter at a wedding in two weekends, which will be some extra money. If it works out, I might ask him if I can stay on as a freelance shooter, but quit the editing thing. The cast prices are too much for the commute to make any kind of long-term sense.
I have not made as much writing progress lately as I wanted to, but I'm getting there.
Dark Knight kind of got me in the mood to try my hand at some kind of intense thriller/suspense/action film with substance. I've never been so entertained at a film in my entire life. Brilliant. It kind of reminded me of seeing Jurassic Park with my Dad way back in 1992, just sitting there the whole time in complete awe and suspense. It wasn't just watching a movie, it was an experience.
I want to write something like that, Dark Knight, with some kind of crazy villain. Maybe I'll try to think of something after I finish the two scripts I've got now.
I do have a vague notion of a superhero, but I think it'd work better as a show, possibly. It involves vigilante "heroes", some of whom are corrupt. Maybe "The Shield meets X-Men" or something. I don't know, I don't have it all there yet.

solojones I will PM you the details, but recently I decided this would work better as a novel than a screenplay. there's just too much I want to explore that couldn't fit the time restraints of a film.

Does anyone know of a site where I can download sound effects for free?

What kind of effect? I used to know of a few sites but I forget where they were. Whatever free effects you download though aren't going to be that great. Depending on the effect, I'd recommend trying to recreate the sound yourself and record it directly.

I've pretty much downloaded every free sound effect I can find to a Sound Effect Library folder. I hate not having what I need and then having to google it.

Good, free gunshots are tough to find. It depends on what you get the muzzle flash to look like. If it looks good visually, it will help sell the sound effect.

We have several sources to record some real effects. One of my friends has an AR-15, that we actually used during filming. But we can only fire it semi-auto (since automatic weapons are illegal, duh). If we can't find any quality effects, I guess we will just see what we can get from there.

Or you can just find a video of someone firing a gun (hundreds of them on youtube) and just use converttube.com to rip the audio.
Ack, well on monday I sign up for classes at this State Uni. At last. No more GE crap. (although my current school screwed me and I won't be able to file for my AA degree for another semester.) I'm gonna go down to the city and talk to an adviser, but I have a friend who transferred there a year before me, so he's got the lowdown on what classes I'll need.
Right now it looks like I'll be taking:
Intro to Filmmaking
Critical Studies + Discussion group
Film History I

Well, I just sent off an email letter quitting my video editing job. The cost of the commute is no longer financially sensible, so it had to be done.
