I am a little confused as to what spider is saying about film school's focusing on editing... there are film schools that have editing programs, specific tracks just for editors.

I am only familiar with one school that offers and Editing only program. In my experience most schools that offer editing as a course offer it as part of the larger film program (and even then I have found them to be insufficient) and that I only know of one school that offers an entire program based solely on editing.

Clearly that doesn't mean there are not more out there, I just don't know of any. Its a rather moot point however since the school I am talking about is closing its doors.

BTW, random gripe... Why is the title of this thread "hey!"? tongue

Because the original title was something to the effect of "Hey! Do we have an official filmmaking thread yet?" When it was learned we did not, the title was edited slightly.

So fellow filmmakers from my previous school are going to do a feature film. Production starts this winter. Maybe I'll be able to get on board in some capacity. I'll only be going to class 2 days a week, so I'll have a lot of free time.

My documentary is nearly finished. Just have to do some color correcting, and add the music.

The city was filming a commercial in the library I work at this morning. The accidentally forgot their reflector board. ha ha ha.

Education-wise, I qualified for a state grant that will take care of my tuition this semester, so I can put off taking out a loan for now. Whew.

I have found a few new writing contests that I intend on entering. I'm still working on the same two feature scripts. I should be able to have enough done on them in time for these deadlines.

I'm also thinking about trying to get back into prose writing, which I haven't really done for a few years. I have a few basic ideas, but nothing really concrete.

I've been thinking more and more about trying to get an MFA in screenwriting. I can't figure out a way to afford it though. I'd have to get some kind of fellowship or scholarships to completely cover tuition, because there's no realistic way I can actually afford it. I'm thinking maybe I'll apply to a few schools just for the hell of it and see what happens. If I can't get the funds, so be it.

I'm having second thoughts about my major. One thing is that I'm thinking I might want to have my emphasis be in animation rather than production if animation includes motion graphics and whatnot. Also I'm considering double majoring in film and television production. Whatever. I still have time to figure out my direction.

Well I'm in an awkward situation right now. About a month ago I emailed by previous employer explaining why I had to quit. Never heard back...never got paid. Over the past month I've been sending increasingly annoyed (but still basically polite) emails to him. No reply. No cash. I had assumed he'd been getting my emails, but was just being a jerk and not responding. So a few days ago I remembered this company had a second email address, so I sent off another email, and sent it to both addresses. Now, today, I finally get a reply, and apparently he never even received any of my other emails. So he's talking to me in a rather rude tone, but he has been under the impression that I just stopped going to work without telling him.

So anyway, I replied to him at that address and tried to explain the situation. Boy, do I feel rather terrible. Guess I won't be putting this place on my resume.

Lesson learned, I hope. I saw your earlier email where you said you quit your job by email. I almost wrote a post about that, warning you never to do that, but I didn't think you'd take it very well, so I kept my mouth shut. But I recognized some mistakes that I made in the past in what you did.

Never, ever, ever quit a job by email or phone or whatever. Do it in person, and do it professionally and with good grace, even if you hated the job and hated the person you worked for and even if it's a real chore to do it. It's ALWAYS best to leave a place on good terms...ESPECIALLY if they haven't paid you and especially if you think you may ever need them for a reference or want to put them on your resume. Never, never burn bridges, even bridges that appear worthless. That's a good life lesson. You never know if the person you diss may turn out to be a big success, and you may REALLY want them as a reference.

We all make mistakes, the question is: do we learn from them? wink

Good luck in all your endeavors.

He's gotten back in touch with me again and assured me that I will indeed be receiving the payment I am owed. We are uncertain as to why he never received my prior emails. I see them in my Sent Mail folder, so I have to think the error is on his side.

Anyway, regulars of the film thread, I am saying farewell! This will be my last post in here for awhile, and possibly ever. I'm not sure. It has been clear to me for some time that I needed to leave the JC, but I've put it off for a long time, just because I like the place. It's fun, it's entertaining. It has become clearer to me in recent weeks that it's time to move on, though. This place is just too distracting. It is really taking up a lot of my free time. I need to focus, 100%, on my screenwriting. I need to start making a serious, committed effort to try to get some kind of career off the ground. Maybe I'm not going to succeed right away, but I have to try. To do that, I need to actually write. Every day, probably. Not just think and plan ideas in my head, and write in bursts every now and then. I need to start taking things more seriously and get down to work. I've decided that I am incapable of doing that and also remaining at the JC. The distraction is just too great. I am telling myself that whenever I feel like posting on the JC from now on, I'm either going to work on a script or read a book. Hopefully my brain health will improve. I've got some good script ideas bouncing around in my skull right now, and I'm looking forward to working on them and putting them on paper. Over the next year I intend to write several screenplays and start submitting them to contests and agencies, and see what happens. At some point, probably not in the uber-near future, I think I want to try to get out to LA. We'll see.

I am going to miss this thread though. This is probably my favorite thread on the JC. I very much enjoy discussing these kinds of things with you people, who share most of my own aspirations. It is possible that after a few months I'll swing back and check in in this thread every now and then, but I don't know if I will or not. So in case I actually do manage to make my departure permanent, I am saying farewell and wishing all of you luck in your future endeavors. If anybody wants to contact me for some reason, you can send me an email at RickMcd@gmail.com.

Well...bye!

Well isn't this a little depressing. sad I wish you well A-B as you are possibly one of the most zany original people I have ever had the pleasure of coming across in my life and have high hopes for your writing career. While you may not be a regular I encourage you to return and give us updates on the wacky antics of your career so that one day we can all say "hey I knew that guy!"
