I think 30 Rock's in an appropiate position. It's too new to be high. A spot on any list at all is good enough, after only one season.

I totally disagree. It was one GREAT freaking season. After one season of Arrested Development it was already good enough to be among the top 5 sitcoms of all time, I think after this one season of 30 Rock it's already good enough to merit a higher spot than Little House on the Prarie.

....What? And what if the following two seasons ended up being the worst thing to ever happen to television? Would it still be in the top 5? Don't get me wrong, AD is a great show and just missed making my list but you can't declare a show to be the greatest of all time after one season.

I already discussed this in the Amph thread with people putting Heroes so high on their lists. Sure it's one of your favourite shows right now but there's only been one season! After one year it's already one of the best shows ever? Come on. Just because a show has a great first season doesn't mean that the next season will be equally great (i.e. Prison Break).

People should wait a few years before declaring a show to be one of the best ever unless of course it's a miniseries or if the show got cancelled after one year....or if you've just never really watched a whole lot of TV in your life.

i'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, but it's the top 100 tv shows not the top 100 "regular" shows.

Most of my friends who love BSG think the show jumped the shark with the last season finale so does that mean that the show will be ranked down? tongue

Are you serious with this? Of course not. If shows were permanently affixed in their positions, the first 100 television shows ever would be, chronologically, the best 100, how is that right?
We can only measure the best shows up to this point in history, it would be absurd to measure future TV shows (I learned that the hard way with The Black Donnellys). So at the end of the first season, AD was among the top 5 sitcoms in history and right now 30 Rock is, in my opinion, way better than at least 75 of the other shows that will show up on this list.

What is with your black and white thinking [interrobang] the next season doesn't have any impact on a list that we're making NOW, holding off on saying a show is great just because it isn't done yet is ridiculous.

100) Knight Rider

I have never seen this and have no interest in watching a show about a talking car and the Hoff.

99) Rome

Far, far too low (or high) on the list. Honestly it's hard to compare HBO programming with standard fare, but at the very least this was a historical drama that outdid, on every level, Oscar winning films on the same era and a truly great historical epic. This should be closer to 50 than 100.

98) Gilmore Girls

I think I saw a couple minutes once. The WB is rarely my cup of tea.

97) Extras

Brilliant and hilarious, but it certainly shouldn't be ahead of Rome.

96) The Bugs Bunny Show (all of them)

Very influential, but also very formulaic.

95) 30 Rock

I may pick this up on DVD tomorrow. I've been wanting to watch it for some time.

94) News Radio

Never heard of it.

93) Little House On The Prairie

*cringes* I hope this is was a joke.

92) Late Night With Conan Obrien

Conan is funny, but I don't like talk shows and I honestly don't think it should be placed over many of the tremendous comedies and dramas that failed to get more votes.

91) Brideshead revisited

Have never seen or even heard of beyond recognizing the name.

90) WKRP in Cincinnati

Interesting... it appears to be a precursor to many other shows, but I don't recall ever hearing about it.

I'm aware we can only judge a show up to this point. All I'm saying is that it doesn't make sense to call a show the best of all time after only one season. Of course we can't predict the future, but personally I think it's silly to give an enormous amount of praise to a show without considering where it could be going or how it will end up in a certain amount of time. And of course one will ask "how can we even predict where a show will go in the future?" Well, that's why we have to wait and see.

But hey, if it works for you then so be it.

89) The Brady Bunch

"the hawaiian vacation two-parter, jan's lemons and black wig, umbrella in the convertible, plastic dracula hair all the way to Oliver -- I could go on for hours trying to describe the memorable episodes "

(pork chops and apple sauce)

-G-O-A-T-

Only had one quote for Brady Bunch... go figure. tongue I kid, the show's a classic... squeaky clean... and very quotable.

88) The Wonder Years

So, I got a really detailed explaination of why WWE is the best show ever, but no love for The Wonder Years.. *sigh* tongue

The Wonder Years is an Emmy Award-winning American television dramedy created by Carol Black and Neal Marlens. It ran for five seasons on ABC, from 1988 through 1993. The pilot aired on January 31, 1988 after ABC's coverage of Super Bowl XXII.

The Wonder Years, set in 1968-1973 (each season took place exactly twenty years before the then current year) tackles the social issues and historic events of that time through the eyes of main character Kevin Arnold. Kevin also deals with typical teenage social issues, including those prompted by his main love interest, Winnie Cooper, as well as typical family troubles. The story is narrated by an older, wiser Kevin (voiced by Daniel Stern), describing what is happening and what he learned from his experiences in an alternately nostalgic and ironic tone.

The show achieved a spot in the Nielsen Top Ten for two of its six seasons. TV Guide named the show one of the 1980s' 20 best. After only six episodes aired The Wonder Years won an Emmy for best comedy series in 1988

87) Sex and The City

"Sure, it might be the realm of ladies, but the program features the best seasonal writing of any TV show I've seen. From season one, the four leads grow and mature, and grow on the audience like they are really spending time with them each week. It might have made headlines for the sex, but this one really speaks volumes about how great character development should be done. "

-TheBoogieMan

The show was based in part on writer Candace Bushnell's book of the same name, compiled from her column with the New York Observer. Bushnell has stated in several interviews that Carrie Bradshaw is her alter ego; when she originally wrote the "Sex and the City" essays, she used her own name initially; for privacy reasons, however, she created the character of Carrie Bradshaw, a woman with the same career (writer) and same initials.

The narrative of the show focuses on Carrie and her three best girlfriends. (Bushnell has indicated that Carrie's friends are composites of her friends.) Together, Carrie and her friends represented a cross-section of contemporary American women. The women discussed their sexual desires and fantasies, as well as their beliefs and opinions about their "oh-so-sexiness". The show often portrayed frank discussions about romance and sexuality, particularly in the context of being a single woman in her mid-thirties.

86) OZ

"Oz--Brutal, compelling--if not very realistic--prison drama that could be excruciatingly funny"

-CaptainBinaca

Oz is narrated by Augustus Hill, a disabled prisoner confined to a wheelchair who is played by Perrineau, in surreal segments that usually relate to an overall theme of the episode. When necessary, usually when a character is introduced, Hill, in an omniscient fashion, narrates said character's prison number, their crime, and their sentence. Hill, a former drug dealer and ex-junkie, appeared as a recurring character in the show's storylines until the sixth season, in which narrating duties were taken up by various deceased characters as well as Hill. The narrations by Hill are thus a form of breaking the fourth wall, although he did not address the camera during scenes where he was interacting with the other characters in the story. Only once in the show does Hill appear to address another character with one of his narrations, in the season 3 episode Unnatural Disasters Adebisi turns on a computer to see Hill dressed as a pharaoh speak to him. (However, the unusual sight is quickly discarded by him as a drug-induced hallucination, and he never speaks of it). The narration made by Augustus Hill over the series is similar in both purpose and execution to the role of the Greek chorus in Ancient theatre, both providing plot exposition, as well as commenting upon the events of the stories, giving the audience a clearer understanding of the narrative's moral / thematic standpoint.

85) Keeping Up Appearances

"During highschool, very few channels would come in on my tv set in my room and one of them liked to play old British comedies. This is a classic show. Patricia Routledge is comedy gold. "

-HookLineAndSinker

Hyacinth Bucket is a social-climbing snob who insists her last name is pronounced "bouquet". She spends most of her time trying to impress her neighbours and friends by boasting about her wealthy sister Violet and pretending to be of a more “aristocratic” class than she actually is. Simultaneously, Hyacinth tries desperately to avoid her lower-class relatives who frequently turn up, either on the woman's doorstep (a suburban Bungalow situated on Blossom Avenue), or in public places; embarrassing Hyacinth, thus sabotaging her hopes of climbing the social ladder.

84) Cowboy Bebop

In the year 2071, the crew of the spaceship Bebop travel the solar system trying to apprehend bounties. In the slang of the era, "Cowboys" are bounty hunters. Most episodes revolve around a specific bounty, but the show often shares its focus with the pasts of one of each of the four main characters and of more general past events, which are revealed and brought together as the series progresses.

83) Chaser’s War on Everything

During the pre-production period of the The Chaser's War on Everything numerous names were suggested for the program, most notably 'Thank Allah It's Friday!' and 'The Chaser's Age Of Terror Variety Hour', which were rejected by the ABC. The show's studio segments are performed panel-style in front of a live audience, on a set reminiscent of where the group used to meet. These segments are interspersed with pre-produced location items and fake advertisements. The series looks at all issues and attacks a wide range of current topics in politics and the media.

In December 2006 The Chaser's War on Everything won an Australian Film Institute Award for 'Best Television Comedy Series' and Andrew Hansen won an AFI Award for 'Best Performance in a Television Comedy.' In May 2007, the program was nominated for the TV Week Logie award "Most Outstanding Comedy Program".

82) Home Improvement

" Was a show my family and I watched together and I had a crush on Randy (JTT). tongue "

-Earwen_Lightrider

The series centered on the antics of the Taylor family, which, along with Tim, included his wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) and their three sons: the popular and athletic Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), comedian and intellectual Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and the socially awkward youngest son, Mark (Taran Noah Smith). The show is set in Metro Detroit, as evidenced by the many references to the area in the show (especially local colleges, whose shirts are worn by Tim in the show).

81) A-Team, The

"Yes, after a while it was the same episode over and over and almost nobody died, but the performances were always great. The show had action, humor, superb stuntwork, and an awesome soundtrack. "

- Dal-Intrepid

According to Mr. T's account in Bring Back... The A-Team in 2006, the role of B.A. Baracus was written for him from the beginning, after which all the other roles and other actors were decided upon. He was thereby the first to be approached to star on The A-Team.

80) Kids in the Hall

One of the best sketch comedy shows ever... almost (but not quite) better than Monty Python

- Me

Before the group formed, Bruce McCulloch and Mark McKinney were working together doing Theatresports in Calgary, performing under the name, "The Audience". At the same time, Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald were performing around Toronto as The Kids in the Hall (KITH). In 1984, the two pairs met in Toronto, and began performing regularly as KITH, with a rotating band of members, including Paul Bellini for a short time. When Scott Thompson was invited to join in January of 1985, the group had its final form.

Not long afterwards, the Kids broke up for a short time when scouts for Saturday Night Live invited Mark and Bruce to New York to become writers for that show, Dave Foley made a poorly received movie debut with High Stakes and Scott and Kevin worked with the Second City touring group. They were reunited in 1986. After SNL's Lorne Michaels saw them perform as a troupe, plans began for a TV show. In 1987 Michaels sent them to New York to what was essentially a "Comedy Boot Camp", and in 1988 their HBO special/pilot aired. Regular episodes of the show began airing in 1989

I recently watched the first season of Sex and the City. I was unexpectedly awed. Boogie is correct, the writing is superb. That said, I wish it had attained a higher position, maybe in the 30s.

love Charlotte/Kristin Davis.

Sex and the City and The A-Team are the AWESOME but I thought The Wonder Years would be higher.

It had, perhaps, the saddest series finale of all TV (Quantum Leap was close) but man, getting to that point was pure joy.

Especially because it introduced "Like or Like Like?" into the vernacular...
