I hate you.

My girlfriend on Equilibrium: "This movie works on a meta-level as a self-parody, a story about a society with no original ideas made as movie with no original ideas as an ironic statement."

Equilibrium is terrible. The action scenes are comically inept, the dialogue is terrible, the acting is an atrocity, and the whole thing is basically a string of cliches strung together with a sense of self-congratulatory pomposity that is absolutely mind-blowing. It's the kind of movie that a pretentious 14-year-old would make, given a big enough budget. It's beyond MST3K worthy and almost glorious in its terribleness.

Requiem for a Dream is basically the same situation. It kind of works in the beginning, but it rapidly descends into what can only be described as unintentional farce. Ludicrous on every level. Cheesy, overblown self-important melodrama. Another movie that works on the level of a particularly dim 14-year-old.

Well I think I can safely say I disagree with you on every level.

I just can't stand middlebrow-at-best movies (or any other kind of art work) with delusions of grandeur. I like really good movies, and those are found both at the arthouse theaters and in the mainstream. I like bad movies that are unapologetically fun. I LOATHE movies that think they're a lot smarter than they are.

Like, seriously, Crash? How dumb was that movie? How cheap was the emotional button-pushing? I can't think of a single thing in that movie that was not a cliche, not a single idea or observation that shouldn't have already occurred to anyone with two brain cells and a pulse by the time they are in puberty.

It was all so obvious, and so trite, and so shallow, that it blows my mind that people say that movie made them think about things they had never thought about before. People must be dumber than I thought.

It's deeply amusing to me that most people who think garbage like Crash or Requiem for a Dream are profound and important movies routinely crap on far superior films like Mean Girls or Bring it On because they're mainstream movies in genres they totally discount. It's like people who idolize Coldplay and sneer at Justin Timberlake.

Movies I have hated.... well, I can say that I was actually physically repulsed by the films Spider-Man 3 and The Star Wars Holiday Special. I sincerely regret whatever compulsion that drew me to see these two movies. Spider-Man 3 did have few redeeming points, but that was easily outweighed by the fact that at times it displayed a dog-like desire to please, and the rest of the time it seemed hell-bent on being as obnoxious as possible. The SWHS, well I really only have myself to blame for sitting through this tripe after my brother thought it would be funny to buy a bootleg copy from the Internet and watch it. Oh, woe is me. Never will I retrieve back those wasted hours of my life.

Seeing as how your sig says "Pink Floyd are the Greatest!", you're probably right.

I mean, I don't hate Pink Floyd, they're not terrible, but they're pretty mediocre overall. So many interesting and exciting things happened in music in the 70s, and Pink Floyd pretty much missed all of them. I really want to give Piper at the Gates of Dawn a more serious listen at some point, but Pink Floyd (and Coldplay, and U2) are pretty much the musical equivalent of the movies I hate: safe, boring, mediocre, unchallenging and uncreative work which gets a reputation for being "boundary-pushing" among shallow-headed music fans who wouldn't know a boundary if they tripped over it. It's music for people with bad taste who think they have really good taste, and the movies in question are the same way.

You know that episode of Family Guy where Lois is reading The DaVinci Code? She says that she really likes that the chapters are so short, because it makes you feel really smart when you finish them so quickly. It's kind of like that. Boring and/or bad work that congratulates the reader/listener/viewer on how smart he or she is for liking it, so that people can experience a sense of superiority without actually having to leave their comfort zone.

Wow, I guess I dislike Pink Floyd more than I thought. Actually, it's probably just that I don't respect Pink Floyd as artists at all, and I tend to dislike Pink Floyd fans as a result.

It's a great movie if you turn the sound off.

It's gorgeous, but the things they are saying are so dumb. It's like being trapped in a room with a bunch of really sheltered and not especially intelligent college freshmen getting high and talking about their theories on life. In other words, Hell itself.

I like about half of Linklater's stuff. I love Slacker to death - it's aware of how stupid some of the people are, without being condescending and with a lot of evident love and affection. Dazed and Confused is also fantastic. Waking Life and School of Rock both suck hard. I really want to see Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and A Scanner Darkly.

1. Never, ever compare Pink Floyd to U2 or Coldplay. Pink Floyd are talented, U2 and Coldplay aren't/
2. I don't know that episode of Family Guy as Family Guy is terrible.
3. Why don't you respect Pink Floyd as artists? David Gilmour is one hell of a guitarist and Waters was a great lyricist.

I might've agreed with you a few years ago, but lately I prefer TPM over ESB or ROTJ.

My most hated movies would be anything by Di$ney or Pixar. They are to filmaking what McDonald's is to food; mass-produced tripe marketed to children who don't know any better and adults with no taste.

Isn't that what TPM is?

The Pixar films are well written and have great stories. Disney, if you're talking about cartoons, it depends on which era you're talking about. Lately I'd agree with you, but the classics from when I was a kid like Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, and Aladdin are fantastic. They are CHILDRENS films though...so criticizing them for targeting children isn't really fair...I mean...they're supposed to.

Whooooooooa horsey. Even if you ignore the past 7-10 years of Disney, they've still made quality films such as Aladdin, The Lion King, Snow White, Mary Poppins etc. Also, Enchanted was great fun and that's in the cinema now! As for Pixar, all I can say is Toy Story. Superb film.
