Yarael Poof has just realized that he hasn’t been on a banner except in spirit in the past two years. He’s now starting to wonder if people don’t like the look of him. Why is there this hatred of Poof? It makes Yarael Poof very sad. So be it. He’ll just sit in banner limbo, all alone, without any friends. So alone. So very, very alone and sad. But Yarael Poof is not bitter at all that he’s been reduced to a brief 'Yarael Poof says' line on every banner. No, not bitter at all, not him.

I'm glad you said that. Because it will be funny when Obama breaks ties and condemns Ayers. Just wait.

If Ayers decides to insult Obama and purposely tries to sabotage his campaign, I see no reason why he shouldn't break ties.

Yeah, where has it been established that these guys are friends? Seems like some pretty intense spin to me.

Laissic is right though that the Republicans are going to use this. The Republican political machine seems to be much more adept at character assassination and fear mongering than the Democrats are. Just look at the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth from 2004. Those sorts of people are going to try to pull the same kind of thing with Obama in this election.

To be fair, there's plenty of scare mongering going on the other way too. The Democrats are just lousy at it.

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/04/the_rules_change_for_obama.html

Barack Obama seemed puzzled. Angrily puzzled. The apostle of hope seemed flummoxed by the audacity of the question. At the April 16 Philadelphia debate, George Stephanopoulos, longtime aide to Democratic politicians, was asking about his longtime association with Weather Underground bomber William Ayers.

The Weather Underground attacked the Pentagon, the Capitol and other public buildings; Ayers was quoted in The New York Times on Sept. 11, 2001, as saying, "I don't regret setting bombs; I feel we didn't do enough."

It was at Ayers' house that Obama's state Senate candidacy was launched in 1995; Obama continued to serve on a nonprofit board with Ayers after the Times article appeared.

Obamaites live-blogging the debate were outraged. The press is not supposed to ask such questions. They are supposed to invite the candidates to expatiate on how generous their health care plans are. Or to allow them to proclaim that "we are the change that we are seeking." Or to once again bash George W. Bush.

There was some of that in this debate. But Obama was asked about his association with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, his remarks about wearing an American flag lapel pin, his comment that "bitter" small town Pennsylvanians "cling to guns and religion" and his "friendly" relations -- "friendly" is his campaign adviser David Axelrod's word -- with William Ayers.

More on Obama and Ayers.
http://patterico.com/2008/04/24/la-times-gives-bill-ayers-a-puff-piece/

In February, Obama strategist David Axelrod described Obama and Ayers as friendly acquaintances:

“Bill Ayers lives in his neighborhood. Their kids attend the same school,” [Axelrod] said. “They’re certainly friendly, they know each other, as anyone whose kids go to school together.”

One of the comments:
Accept that Axelrod is lying about the Obama - Ayers relationships. Their kids don’t go to the same kids — they have about a 20 year age difference. Ayers and Obama have a shared political and ideological relationship, they’ve been college forum buddies who cooperate to put on programs about education, left wing politics, and kids — often set up by Michelle Obama herself. A quick google search will give you the links and sources on this — mostly university press releases.

How could Obama's kids and Ayers' kids currently go to the same school?

I was doing a little research on the Weather Underground, and apparently every time they bombed somewhere they gave some kind of advance warning and went to a lot of trouble to make sure that nobody would be killed during a bombing. So they pretty much just destroyed property, and apparently ruined some data at the Pentagon. I mean...not that bombing is ever a nice thing...but if you ARE going to blow stuff up...making sure you're only damaging property and not people is the way to do it! From the way the press talks about them you'd think we're dealing with the American Al-Queada or something. The only time anyone got killed was when they accidentally detonated their own bomb, just like that scene in Across the Universe, except probably with less singing.

There was a later incident with a bank robbery in which two police officers were killed, but I don't think that was a direct Weather Underground scheme, but it did involve people who were members, but Bill Ayers himself was not involved with this.

His relationship to Obama is obviously going to be greatly exaggerated during the general election, and the unfortunate thing is some people are going to buy right into it regardless of accuracy. It's just like this story coming out of West Virginia with some ignorant guy saying "I heard he's a Muslim and his wife's an atheist!" All you need is for people to "hear" something and they won't bother to check it out for themselves.

I do think it says something good about Obama that his biggest "controversies" have been about people he knows and what people he knows have said rather than things he himself has done. He knows an eccentric pastor. He knows a guy who helped damage government property 40 years ago. Wow. Catastrophe.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wait, what relationship? I must have missed where he sought out his endorsement?

Obama and Ayers are friends and served on the same board of directors together of some Chicago foundation. Ayers started Obama's politcal career and helped him get recognition when Obama entered politics.

Besides his terrorists activities, there is a tape of Ayers burning the American flag and stomping on it. Now, I'm glad that I live in a country where it is legal for idiots to do this. But why be friends with someone who does it?

Why make such a big deal about a radical 60's organization that was protesting 40+ years ago? They did what a lot of others did back then, they protested against a b* war.

It's not like him and Obama were sharing a bunkbed at summercamp.

OMG, it would totally suck if Obama made the country a better place than it's been for the last 8 years.

I'm fairly certain that pretty much any of the candidates would make the country a better place than it's been for the last 8 yrs--or at least appear to for a while. tongue

The problem for Obama, in my mind, is that he's done so little that there's nothing else to do but look at these associations. What we have to look at are: (1) fantastic orator, (2) unremarkable state Senate stint, (3) good book, (4) speech at DNC, (5) unremarkable stint in the US Senate, (6) people he knows and things he's done outside of politics.

Obama has claimed that he can "bring the country together" across racial, political, and economic divides and that he's an agent of change. Ok. I'll grant him that he makes a moving speech and that this can go a long way to achieving that. But, as far as I can tell, that's all he's got. Nothing in his background--absolutely nothing in his background--gives any hint at this ability from what I can tell.

Hillary tried to discuss 1-5 in that list above early on in the primary season--saying essentially that all he's got is a great speech but no experience. Of course, it fell flat because she doesn't have much more experience and she doesn't even have a great speech. The thing is that 1-5 is pretty much razor thin. It's been examined as much as it can be. There's nothing there--not a whole lot bad; not a whole lot good; just...not a whole lot. That might seem like an asset to some--it's certainly worked for him to date.

So all we're left with is who he knew and why he knew them. That's pretty standard political fare. Annoying as all get-out, but it's pretty standard. For all the bitching and moaning that his supporters do about how patently unfair the coverage has been, he's still winning. The only thing I think it's all done to him is made it clear that Obama is just another politician--a good one, yes, but just another politician. I think a sober approach to the man is a good idea.

But

This is the robbery that Andalite is talking about:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brinks_robbery_%281981%29

It involved members of the Black Liberation Army and The Weather Underground. It happened in Nanuet, New York. One town over from where I live.

Yea, the Weather Underground were just like any average hippie protesters. All they did was made a few anti-war signs. Nothing else. Oh wait.
