Am I the only person who wishes Bill Clinton would shut the hell up? Hillary is doing quite a nice job of digging her own hole, but Bill is doubling that. I don't really mind the fact that he is sabatoging her campaign but his rheotric is tedious and desperate. He is now encouraging voters to choose the presidential candidates based on their records and not speeches. I ask you this, what record? Hillary flip flopping on the Iraq War? That's about the most significant thing I can remember about her record as a senator. Obama may not have all of the right answers but at least he is honest with people and sticks to his guns (opposing the war, disclosing tax returns). If the method by which Hillary has ran her campaign is any indication of how she'd run the country if she wins, then we're looking at 1929-1941 all over again.

I actually went to see Bill Clinton, and in my opinion he is her best advocate by far.

The South Carolina results say otherwise.

The man is intelligent, but his behavior has been erratic and a bit wreckless. He has done just as much to hurt her campaign as he has to help it, IMO.

His antics directly lead to her crushing South Carolina defeat and very well might be the reason he's drawing over 80% of the African-American vote in contests now. Remember, before Iowa that was a group Hillary was actually winning. He could be a great asset, if used correctly, but so far he's not doing her many favors.

And, really, concerning records, or voting records at least, there's really not much of a difference between the two, at all.

When is it certain one of them will have won or lost this primary thing or whatever it is? I'm getting bored with hearing that one or the other is about to win.

Here's the dealo: I know a lot of people are wondering why Huckabee is still running. Not to mention the fact that this question holds more weight now that Romney endorsed McCain and more then likely his delegates would go to McCain; putting McCain at over 1,000 I believe. I know a lot people say that Huckabee is staying in to play for the 2012 bid. Some also say he's in to be that guy that conservatives rally behind. I think it's something else. This is just my opinion but I think Huckabee is in because of McCain's health. He hasn't admitted this and never will admit it of course. Look at McCain. He's 72, he looks fragile. Look at his speeches. He's either reading from a teleprompter or Post It notes. He's never reading from the heart. The man looks tired. He didn't campaign aggressively for the Potomac primaries and I think it was because he was tired. Just look at him, he looks worn out. If you think the primaries are something, wait until he fights for the General with an enthusiastic Democrat. McCain will look like death compared to their energy. If something were to - God forbid - happen to McCain, there is still on guy left standing. Everyone else bowed out and conceded. It's mean, but it's politics, let's be honest. And I'm not saying it's not a bad strategy to have on Huckabee's front. He wins on a ton of points.

If McCain was smart at all, he would throw the VP to Huckabee and shut him up.

So, I am confused.

When do we know who the official candidates are??

I registered as an Independent...is it true that in these primaries you can only vote if you're a Republican or Democrat? I think Arizona has an open primary, but I wasn't sure.

With all due respect, McCain has survived a hell of a lot worse than Presidential campaigns. He's obviously bringing his 94 year old mother around with him to point out longevity in his family. I'm sure he's tired, but we've had older Presidents. And I think part of his speech style is just that- his style. I don't think he feels the need to give rousing speeches, it's just not what he's good at, he relies on giving particular ideas instead. Of course it's important to have a good backup plan. I do not think Huckabee is that plan.

I think Romney is going for a VP bid. I think he may well get it.

McCain trots his 90-odd year old mom around to all his events precisely to allay fears that he's too old to do the job. McCain has never been a dynamic speaker so his current underwhelming performance in speeches is hardly surprising. McCain isn't running on personality--he'd lose that fight in a heartbeat. He's running on the notion that he will "do what he believes is right", not what is politically convenient and that, unlike Bush, what he thinks is right tends to be what's best for the country. Some people rankle at that idea.

No matter how you cut it, this November's elections will be a competition between experience and idealism, assuming Obama wins the nomination. More importantly, it's a battle for moderates. 60% of the country will vote Republican or not vote at all. It's that 40% of voters that can and will be swayed by the vision that the candidate in question presents that this is all about. Experience vs idealism.

Huckabee can bring social conservatives to the table, but I think he's just as likely to drive moderates away from McCain, so it might be a wash. I think McCain needs to be McCain. Run on who he is and what he stands for. If he loses, it will be because idealism wins out over experience. Taking Huckabee on as a VP candidate, or if Clinton wins the nomination somehow, will fundamentally change what the election is about.

Edit: So it looks like Rachel pretty much posted my thoughts before I did. How embarrassing! blush

Arizona actually has a closed primary, and it was on February 5th. I couldn't vote in the Democratic one because I'm a registered Republican (never got around to changing my affiliation, which I first marked in 2000).

We basically already know who the Republican candidate is (McCain), but we may not know who the Democratic candidate is until as late as August.

Also, I had a dream last night that I went to a small Hillary speaking event because there was this awesome fish tank, and I was just watching the fish there because there was one that could swim on top of the water. And then I went to a vending machine and scored big by winning tons of free crab meat. When I got back, Hillary was speaking and crying. The other viewers were distressed. I just wanted her to shut up so I could take my crab meat home and put it in the fridge.

...what does it mean?
