There is no phrase in sports more magical than "pitchers and catchers." The Cubs, Royals, A's, Mariners, and Giants begin spring training in Arizona today, marking the official start of the season.
There's certainly a lot happening. But the big story of the day, of course, the Mets are bringing the Apple to CitiField.
All is right with the world.
Amazing.

Soon, I'll be able to listen to Dave Niehaus' stories over the radio again as he does the play by play for my beloved Seattle Mariners.
I'll be watching innocent fly balls drop in front of Raul Ibanez, Jose Vidro struggling to leg out an easy single to right field, and Richie Sexson swinging and missing at curveballs in the dirt.
Baseball, I've missed you so.

Always one of my favorite threads . Thanks for starting it, B.
I look for the Diamondbacks to contend this year, given their improved starting pitching.

Indians will make the playoffs this year, and advance to the WS. Go up 3-1, and then choke losing three in a row.
Hope springs eternal here in C-Town.

As I pointed out in the other thread, I look for the Mariners to finish with 86 wins and miss the playoffs. Again.

No, it will be more like this: The Indians will make the playoffs, advance to the World Series, go up 3-1, lose two in a row to get to a Game 7, get within one strike of the world title in the bottom of 9th in Game 7 only to see Joe Borowski come back to walk the guy and then give up the game-winning home run the next batter.
Hope of disaster always springs eternal in Ohio.

The AL is going to be interesting this season. We have three teams who are true WS contenders IMO (Boston, New York and Detroit), with a few more (Anaheim, Cleveland, maybe Seattle) right on the doorstep as well. Should make for good contests all season long.
Just a shame that the Cardinals in the NL will be, unless something Biblical happens, pretty mediocre at best.

I'd defintely put Anaheim and Cleveland in that first group. Anaheim is pretty much going to waltz into the playoffs given their relatively weak division. And despite Detroit's offseason moves, Cleveland is still probably the better team. Of course, all this means is that the Blue Jays or someone is going to sneak up on everyone and win the whole thing.
Amazing.
