I hope they don't. It isn't necessary.
i really think they should. i know it's not a huge difference, but after 162 games to have your season decided in a best of five just seems a bit silly.
I disagree. If you're the better team, then there shouldn't be a problem with winning a best of five. I'm fine with the format the way it is now.
If MLB makes the change though, it won't be for the reason you mentioned. It will only be about
IMO, the NFL and MLB have it exactly right. The NBA and NHL playoffs take forever to get through - they're almost like second seasons, because they are way too long.

But a five game series actually makes it harder for the best team to win. The playoffs are a crapshoot as is, but a seven game series makes it slightly less so as compared to a five game series.

Of course it'll be about money. But in a twisted little way it'll be pro-fan, too. I started thinking about this during Game 3 of the Phillies-Brewers series. The Brewers were in the postseason for the first time in 26 years and they made it after a tremendous finish, winning 6 of their last 7 games. Had they lost game 3 and been swept, the result of their years of waiting and their great play would have been a single home playoff game. At least if they get swept in four games series, there are two home games for the Milwaukee fanbase.

Yes, but with a seven game first round, the playoffs would be just as long as they are now. They'd just fill in some of the current off days that they added in last year to prolong things (and to have the World Series start mid-week).
Amazing.

I don't see what the problem could possibly be this year. We'd have at least one more game of the Cubs playing like crap (The Cub fans were mercifully put out of their misery in three) and the best teams already won their other respective series anyway. And before anything is mentioned about the Angels - best record =/= best team. Their record was a little bloated on crappy AL West division wins.

On the flipside to that, there are plenty of fans that are glad to see teams like the Yanks and Red Sox getting a quick first round boot out of the playoffs.

I don't understand your logic here at all. Your argument is the best team normally wins a short series, but the Cubs, who were the second or third best team in baseball, lost, but that's okay because they played terribly for three games? Maybe I just don't understand the objection to a seven game series. They allow for more drama and more classic moments. A team coming back from a 2-0 deficit to win a best of five isn't nearly as impressive as a team coming from being down 3-0. As a Red Sox fan you should know that better than anyone.
On the flipside to that, there are plenty of fans that are glad to see teams like the Yanks and Red Sox getting a quick first round boot out of the playoffs.
And baseball should cater to anti-fans? Yes, I do enjoy watching the Yankees get eliminated in the first round. And I'd enjoy it just as much if it was a seven game series rather than a five game series. But I'd imagine that most fans don't enjoy seeing their team lose in a short series and that should be baseball's concern. Baseball doesn't make a whole lot of money on anti-Yankee or anti-Red Sox sentiment.
Amazing.

I didn't say the Cubs were the best team, I just commented on putting the fans out of their misery. 2004 was in an ALCS, and coming back from an 0-3 deficit will probably not happen again in our lifetime. The way I see it now, the best teams are the ones remaining. I see the system as working as it currently stands. I personally enjoy the high pressure of a best of 5 dash to 3 wins. Really, between us, it's just personal opinion on the matter.

My team lost a quick 5 game series against the White Sox, in '05, and I was perfectly fine in accepting that we got beat by a better team.
IMHO, this is one of those "If ain't broke, don't fix it" deals.

THE CUBS WERE THE BEST TEAM IN THE NL HANDS DOWN. THE SHORT SERIES IS A DISADVANTAGE FOR BETTER TEAMS CAUSE ANY MINI SLUMP CAN PUT U OUT OF THE PLAYOFFS. NOW THE TEAM THAT PLAYED AGAINST THE DODGERS I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT TEAM THAT WAS BUT THE DODGERS ARE DEFINATELY NOT BETTER THAN THE CUBS. THE NATIONALS COULD HAVE SWEPT THE CUBS TEAM THAT SHOWED UP FOR THE PLAYOFFS. DOESNT' MAKE THEM A WORSE TEAM.
